EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.– Tom Coughlin confirmed this morning that Victor Cruz will not play in Buffalo Sunday because the wide receiver aggravated his calf strain in drills prior to yesterday's practice.

"Victor tried it yesterday and it did not feel right to him, so he did not practice, just a little bit in very beginning," Coughlin said. "Obviously, we're all disappointed in that. But we choose to take the road that we really don't have a lot of choice, which means get him back in rehab, get him back to work and see when he can be on the field. I don't have anything else to share with you, so don't waste a lot of time asking me questions about him. It is what it is. He tried it and didn't make it. He will not be able to play this week."
Coughlin said Cruz underwent an MRI to examine what exactly happened in his left calf, the location of an injury that has sidelined him since Aug. 17. After repeating that Cruz would neither practice nor play, Coughlin said no timetable has been established for the receiver's return. Cruz hasn't played in a game since Oct. 12, 2014, when he tore his right patellar tendon in Philadelphia.
For the second week in a row, the Giants will enter a game with just four healthy receivers: Odell Beckham Jr. and Rueben Randle, plus veteran Dwayne Harris and rookie Geremy Davis. Beckham and Randle each caught seven passes last week in a victory over Washington. Neither Harris nor Davis had a reception.
"Those guys are in there," Coughlin said. "Dwayne knows the offense and a lot of different positions, as does Geremy. They're going to hopefully be able to contribute and make some plays for us this weekend. My level of confidence is high in those guys. They've had multiple reps, they've been in practice every day, they've made our team, so here we are."
- Tight end Daniel Fells will again miss practice with an ankle injury, but Coughlin repeated what he said yesterday: "I think he's going to make it (the game in Buffalo)"
- Tackle Ereck Flowers (ankle) is "gimpy," according to Coughlin, but he will practice. Given that the Bills arguably have the NFL's best front four, playing a rookie tackle who is less than 100 percent physically might come with some risks.
"We'll see where he is," Coughlin said. "If it's possible and we get to the point where we feel confident that he can do it, then he plays."
- The news was mixed on the Giants' defensive ends. Rookie Owa Odighizuwa (foot) "worked well," Coughlin said, but Coughlin said Robert Ayers (hamstring), "had a little problem about three-quarters of the way through, so we'll see about him."
COACH COUGHLIN PRESS CONFERENCE
I'll start out, let me just say about Victor Cruz. Victor tried it yesterday and it did not feel right to him, so he did not practice, just a little bit in very beginning. Obviously, we're all disappointed in that. But we choose to take the road that we really don't have a lot of choice, which means that get him back in rehab, get him back to work and see when he can on the field. I don't have anything else to share with you, so don't waste a lot of time asking me questions about him. It is what it is. He tried it and didn't make it. He will not be able to play this week.
Q: It is the same thing? The same calf strain as before?
A: Yes. Q: He went for an MRI?
A: I don't have any more information for you. Yeah, he went for an MRI. Yes, it is the same calf. That's all I have. He's not going to practice today. He's not going to be in the game this weekend.Q: And no timetable?
A: No.Q: What is your level of confidence in Geremy Davis and Dwayne Harris as the third receiver?
A: Those guys are in there. Dwayne knows the offense and a lot of different positions, as does Geremy. They're going to hopefully be able to contribute and make some plays for us this weekend. My level of confidence is high in those guys. They've had multiple reps, they've been in practice every day, they've made our team, so here we are.Q: You didn't get any catches out of that spot last week. Is it a matter of opportunities or you didn't get the performance you were hoping for?
A: No. You'd like to have everybody have plays distributed. We got Rueben going, we need to get that spot going.Q: Last week you had two tight ends. Are you going to have two this week?
A: Yes.Q: Is Daniel Fells going to practice today?
A: He's not going to practice today, but I think he's going to make it.Q: Everyone else came out alright? All the guys who came out to practice yesterday are OK?
A: Like who?Q: Ereck Flowers?
A: Flowers is gimpy, but he'll be out there.Q: Owa Odighizuwa?
A: Owa worked well.Q: Robert Ayers?
A: Ayers had a little problem about three-quarters of the way through, so we'll see about him.Q: Against this defensive line, if Flowers is gimpy, is it worth having him out there at 80 percent?
A: Well, we'll see. We'll see where he is. If it's possible and we get to the point where we feel confident that he can do it, then he plays.Q: Did you talk to Victor at all? I would imagine another setback has to to be deflating for him.
A: I didn't get a chance to. I will speak to him. I know he's disappointed.Q: Is having only four healthy receivers on the roster something you feel comfortable with?
A: We're capable of doing a few other things with the people we have. We played last week this way.Q: Are you talking about the practice squad?
A: Not necessarily, no.Q: Did any of the guys that worked out on Tuesday impress you?
A: Yeah. There were some guys that impressed us.Q: Would they be possibilities?
A: They will be on a list, that's for sure.Q: Can Wes Welker still play?
A: He was very quick, very active in here.Q: What's the big concern with him? Is it the concussions?
A: We brought him in, worked him out. He was healthy and he worked out well for us inside.Q: Do you think there's a chance you could sign him?
A: There's always a chance. There's a chance for anybody that's out there. If the need comes around, yeah.
