Monday's training camp practice had a little bit of everything.
There were red zone touchdowns, big hits (and a subsequent scuffle), interceptions, batted balls, and even some football follies with Darian Thompson getting his helmet caught on the back of rookie running back Saquon Barkley's jersey. Looking back at all the action, here are three standout players from Monday at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center:
QB ELI MANNING: The Giants spent a good portion in the red zone today, both in one-on-one and team drills. And No. 10 looked sharp. The franchise quarterback threw touchdown after touchdown to a host of receivers up and down the depth chart, including Marquis Bundy, Alonzo Russell, Roger Lewis and Hunter Sharp. Later during a blitz period in the red zone, Sterling Shepard made a tough catch for a score from Manning.
"What's good about our practice sessions is we get a lot of different blitz combinations and concepts," coach Pat Shurmur said before practice. "It's the real mental gymnastics that quarterbacks need to go through."
"Eli? He's the best I've ever seen throw it," backup quarterback Davis Webb said. "I mean, he has total command of the offense – attention wise, route wise, teaching everybody on the fly on the field and off the field. He's ready to rock and roll. We'll all try to keep up. He sets that tone, and I know he's going to play his best."
CB KENNETH DURDEN: Yesterday, the Giants brought back Durden. Today, he made a diving interception. Such is life for an NFL player fighting for a roster spot. The Giants placed rookie cornerback and supplemental draft pick Sam Beal on injured reserve on Monday, opening up room for Durden, who was signed on June 11 and released a month later when the Giants added Beal. Durden had stints on the practice squads of the Oakland Raiders in 2016 and the Tennessee Titans last year. After making the interception, Durden was showered with cheers from his teammates and yells of "I thought you just got off the plane" and "Aren't you jetlagged?"
"So far, so good," defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo said of his unit. "The guys are working hard, doing what we ask, and I'm happy with where they're at from a competition standpoint. As a coach, that's one of your biggest attributes is having competitions so the guys don't get comfortable, and we've got it pretty much all over the field. So, I'm happy with where we're at so far."
WR TRAVIS RUDOLPH: We'll continue the red zone theme here because that's where all the action was on Monday. Rudolph, who eventually made it onto the active roster and started a game as an undrafted rookie last season, hauled in a pair of touchdowns in close quarters. He showed some physicality on the first one, ripping the ball out of the defender's hands for the score. Rudolph adds another layer to the stocked receiving corps for Manning and company.
