Giants.com is counting down to the start of 2024 Giants Training Camp with 24 questions in 24 days.
9) Who could be team captains this year?
Dan Salomone: The first question that needs to be answered is how many. From 2009-17, the Giants had three season-long team captains seven times. They had five captains in 2013-14 before reverting to three from 2015-17. That number doubled to six captains every year from 2018-21. In Brian Daboll's first two seasons as head coach, the Giants had 10 captains.
Here's a look at last year's group:
- QB Daniel Jones
- RB Saquon Barkley
- OT Andrew Thomas
- TE Darren Waller
- DL Dexter Lawrence
- DL Leonard Williams
- LB Bobby Okereke
- CB Adoree' Jackson
- S Xavier McKinney
- K Graham Gano
"The way we do it is I have six slots and I have all the players vote and then if you get a certain amount of votes, then you are named captain," Daboll explained last year. "I think there were 22 people on the team that received votes, which to me is good for our team in terms of the way players perceive other players in leadership roles. Just because you are not a captain doesn't mean you are not a leader on the team. There was a considerable number of guys who got, maybe it was five votes or three votes. Some guys got over 50 votes, but that was all by the players."
If they stick with 10, they will have five vacancies due to the departures of Barkley, Waller, Williams, Jackson, and McKinney. There are options there, starting with outside linebacker Brian Burns, who could do what Okereke did last year and be voted a captain in his first season with a new team.
Wide receiver Darius Slayton, who could get into the top 15 range in Giants history with a 50-catch, 700-yard season, is now one of the most experienced players on the team. You could also look at fellow receiver Wan'Dale Robinson, who will take on a larger role this season. Jon Runyan and Jermaine Eluemunor, two newcomers on the offensive line, are set to be immediate leaders and contributors. Long snapper Casey Kreiter is one of the most respected players on the team and was called a "tireless worker, good leader for us" by Brian Daboll.
The other one to keep an eye on is second-year center John Michael Schmitz. General manager Joe Schoen had high praise for him when he assessed the 2023 rookie class: "The intangibles for John Michael are off the charts. He's got leadership potential. I'd be surprised if he's not a captain down the road."
Barkley is a captain for the fifth consecutive season, the team's longest active streak. Jones is a fourth-year captain and Gano is in his third season in the leadership position. Thomas, Lawrence, Williams and McKinney are second-year captains. Jackson, Waller and Okereke were selected captains for the first time, the latter two players in their debut season with the Giants.
