Four months into his rehab, Stevie Brown said he is able to run on his surgically-repaired knee as the Giants' safety approaches free agency this offseason.

Brown, who tore his left ACL in the third preseason game against the Jets, missed all of the 2013 regular season and was one of 13 Giants to finish the year on injured reserve.

"I'm about to start doing side-to-side stuff here soon," Brown told Giants.com. "It feels strong. It feels stable. I couldn't ask for it to be better at the stage that it's in."

Coming off a breakout campaign in 2012, the fourth-year pro is set to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins on March 11, unless the Giants re-sign him before then.

Brown said he "would love to return" to Big Blue, which is the only team he has spent more than a season with after stints in Oakland, Carolina, and Indianapolis.

"It's a great team," he said. "It's a great organization, great people around here all the time, great fan base -- everything like that. So it's definitely a place I want to be. It's just now we've got to talk to everybody upstairs [in the front office] and see where it goes from there."

As for the people downstairs in the locker room, Brown would also like to return to his teammates, whom he watched battle through a 7-9 season.

Coming off his surgery, Brown said he spent the first four weeks of the season in Florida, relegated to watching the games on TV and calling fellow safety Antrel Rolle for updates on the team.

They weren't good as the Giants lost their first six games.

Brown returned north before his team turned it around and won seven of its final 10 contests.

"To see the people that you worked so hard with all offseason, to see how much they put into it, to see them start off 0-4, and then finally get back in person and see them lose the following two weeks, it was definitely rough," said Brown, who notched all eight of his career interceptions in 2012 with the Giants. "But then the way they turned it around and finished out the season 7-3, it definitely was a good feeling to at least see that they never gave up. They always kept working, and they were just doing everything they could to be better."
