With the first preseason game just two days away, Tuesday's practice was similar to what you would see on a Friday during the regular season. The players were not in pads and there wasn't a lot of full speed contact work. Here are the few things I saw:
- The practice, for the most part, was what you call a carded practice. It is designed so the Giants offense and defense practices against what they will see the Browns do on Thursday night. The Giants offense will run their play, while the Giants scout team defense will run a defense (by reading it off a card shown to them by an assistant coach) that the Browns will likely to show them on Thursday. The two groups then switch roles with the Giants defense going against the Giants scout team offense that is mimicking the Browns. As useful as a practice like this can be for the team, there's only so much to gleam from it viewing from the sideline.
- Wide receiver Alonzo Russell was a consistent target for the scout team quarterbacks. Russell dropped a pass on a beautiful pass from quarterback Kyle Lauletta on a deep post early in the practice but rebounded later on. He caught two deep passes down the sideline from Laulaetta and fellow quarterback Alex Tanney.
- Early on during run drills, Saquon Barkley showed some nice burst getting to and through a few holes inside.
- Landon Collins and Curtis Riley, recently back from injury, were the two starting safeties. Expect to see a lot of snaps for Michael Thomas, Andrew Adams, Darian Thompson and Sean Chandler at safety as well.
- I once again saw Leonard Johnson as the first team slot cornerback. With Donte Deayon still not ready to practice, I would not be surprised to see him get a lot of run in that role on Thursday night.
- I had to take a bit of a double take, but there was Odell Beckham Jr. with a nylon cap on his head, helping out with the scout team defense. I can't say enough about how his energy and attitude this summer has been very positive. He's out there having fun, working hard, and being a good teammate.
