Postgame Quotes: Coach Brian Daboll, QB Daniel Jones

Head Coach Brian Daboll

On thoughts on the game

"Tough to win a game when you turn the ball over five times. Start with that. So, one, decision back in our endzone, give up a score, one-on-one, [Derek] Stingley [Jr.] makes a good play, and then turn it over there in the second half, so don't give yourself much of a chance when you turn the ball over. Obviously, it's something we need to improve on so that's what we'll try to do."

On QB Daniel Jones' thought process on the first interception

"We had a play action pass, called a little bit of time. He [Daniel Jones] moved to the left and made a poor decision, backed up."

On what QB Daniel Jones should have done

"I'm going to go back and look at it, evaluate it. That's what these games are for."

On the importance of QB Daniel Jones finishing the half the way he did

"One of the plans was to call some play actions, throw a bunch of deep balls today just to see how our line does, let him drop back, feel a little bit of rush when it's live and try to push the ball down the field, which has been a point of emphasis. So good for him to hit 'Slay' [Darius Slayton]. The third play, I think it was the third play to [Malik] Nabers, Stingley did a good job, got his arm, that was a close one, so that was one of the things we wanted to try to do, was try to push the ball down the field, hit a couple of them but it was good to finish that drive with a touchdown, but first game back after a little bit of a layoff, live scramble for a first down, so some good things but obviously all of us can do better."

On the evaluation of QB Daniel Jones

"That's what these games are for too. Some evaluation part of it, but, obviously you have a plan going into it. it's a little bit different than I would say a regular season game where you're scheming and doing things like that. I wanted to make sure we had enough plays where we were throwing it down the field, giving opportunities to throw it down the field. Again, there was some good things, good to get him out here and then a couple things we'll learn from and that's what these things are for."

On the decision for WR Malik Nabers to play

"Yeah, no, he's ready to go. Anybody that was ready to go today was going to play and then anybody that they thought needed some time, we didn't play. Whoever was ready to go, physically, we're going to play."

On what he saw on the WB Malik Nabers highlight reel catches

"Again, I will go back and watch it, but he's a good player. Glad we have him."

On if he thought offensive line held up well

"I did. Some of it was action game pass, some of it was just drop back. I thought that that first group, again, this is a faster defense. It's a good defensive football team and I don't think we gave up any sacks today until the end and we had a strip sack at the end with [Tommy] DeVito, but, again, I'll go back and we'll go back and watch it all and make corrections and try to get better this week."

On the secondary and trio of receivers

"Yeah, I think they did some good stuff. Again, when you turn the ball over five times and you give up one for a touchdown, that's tough on a defense. Again, you don't want that to happen. Better it happens in the preseason, obviously, so you can get some resiliency and learn from it, but I think there's some good things. That's a good football team. Tightened up in the red zone, again, had another fourth down stop against their first unit, so a lot to learn from, though, but let's just start with the turnovers."

On T Evan Neal not being in uniform

"He wasn't ready to go. Anybody that was, was ready to go. Hopefully we'll get him this week, we'll see where he's at, but he's getting close."

On the second interception

"It was a good read. Stingley made a good play, left it inside on him. It was man-to-man. [Jalin] Hyatt and Stingley with a little bit of a double move on there that turned into a go and I think it left it a little bit inside, on the right hand side."

On injury updates

"No updates. Gunner [Olszewski] had an injury Friday practice. Gunner will be out for a little while."

Quarterback Daniel Jones

On what he wishes would have been done differently in the first quarter

"I think in a situation like that, obviously you're being tackled in the endzone so intentional grounding there is a safety also so just making sure you dirt it at the feet so there's no chance for intentional grounding and obviously you can't take a sack there in the endzone."

On if it was important for to finish the half the way he did, especially in the huddle hurry up

"Yeah, it felt good to execute, move the ball there in that drive, that two-minute drive. I think guys made some big-time plays out there, Darius [Slayton] and Malik [Nabers], felt good to execute. We want to finish with a touchdown there, I think that was important."

On how he felt during the game and coming out of it?

"I feel good physically. Yeah, the knee felt good. Felt really good and excited to be out there, grateful for all the people who've helped me get to this point, all the doctors and trainers and staff we have here who have helped me. It was fun to be out there. Didn't start perfect, like I said, but we got going and I felt good."

On if when mistakes happen he drowns himself in the tablet, in the film, or just correct and not dwell on it

"I think you kind of want to stay even keel, understand what went wrong and looking at the tablet, talking to coaches, talking to your teammates, getting that out and making sure you're ready to go, but you don't have time to let that affect your confidence, your mood, and I thought I did a good job of that. That's something I always try to focus on."

On the interception and what happened

"Just left the ball inside on a bad throw. Got to miss outside in that situation and throw it down the field.'

On his chemistry with WR Malik Nabers

"Good. Good. I thought, yeah, it's good to do it in a game setting for sure and he made a few really nice catches out there and we've seen it in practice, but, yeah, seeing it in a game, feeling it and making those plays was good."

On changes he will make preparing for regular season

"Yeah, I think. Maybe to throw the ball to Darius. He made a great play on that and got behind the defense, but, yeah, I think just got to settle in. I mean, can't afford to make bad decisions like that and back up there and can't miss a throw like that. So I think it's things I can correct and I'm confident that I'll be ready to go."

On how he feels throwing to WR Malik Nabers

"It's a great feeling. I think like that, giving him a chance and letting him go get it, yeah, like I said, we've made plays all training camp and good to see it on the field."

On how his body feel after the first game in nine months

"Good. Really good. It's good and, yeah, I feel good."

On what kind of luxury is it to have a five-year time chemistry with WR Darius Slayton

"Yeah, I think I said a lot, I've played a lot with Darius and have a lot of trust and confidence in him. Yeah, he's been extremely reliable. He's always in the right spot. He's obviously got the speed to take the top off and make plays, so. Yeah, I feel really good about him and he's had a got camp."

On what the dynamic was like with Head Coach Brian Daboll in his eye calling plays

"I thought it was good. I thought the communication route, yeah, started a little shaky, but I think just kind of maintaining our confidence, composure and continuing to push the ball down the field. I think that's how we got it right kind of and got executing, got moving the ball and I think that was important. So it was good, smooth, and we'll continue to work through it."

On how he feels about being a couple games before the season opener and if he wants to get more play time

"I think you're always trying to improve. You're always trying to improve, getting ready to go. I'll be ready to play and would love to be out there."
