Head Coach Brian Daboll
Daboll: Disappointing game, came down there to the end with the blocked field goal. Jumped over the guard, got the penalty. The other field goal that took three points away. And punt return called back. Had too many penalties, obviously. Disappointing, disappointing outcome. Thought the guys that played – a lot of the young guys – did some good stuff. They battled. It's a disappointing outcome of the game. It's a tough one.
Q: What did you see on the block?
A: The block?
Q: The one at the end.
A: Jumped over (guard Jake) Kubas it looked like. He finished the play before. Got called on it. We changed up a little bit of our technique based on some of the stuff they were doing with their rushes – knocking the guy's arm out and doing things like that. Ghoby (special teams coordinator Michale Ghobrial), I thought, did a good job trying to make sure that didn't happen. So, then they called the one and it took three points off the board. And get down to the end of it, and they jumped over and made a play.
Q: How similar was that to the one earlier in the year when you guys blocked the field goal in Seattle?
A: I'd have to look at it. I know we changed up a few things to try to go against what they did on their field goal rush team. I've got to take a look at it. But that's what I saw.
Q: On the Kubas penalty that took points off the board – was that just a lack of discipline there? What did you see there?
A: I saw him try to finish a play. These guys are rushing down the middle of him, and he's just trying to finish. And they called a penalty.
Q: Do you look at inexperience, in that situation, for him as a player? Once they called the penalty on him, then all of a sudden, you guys kind of back off a little bit.
A: Well, I wouldn't say we backed off. They made a nice play. He finished a guy on a field goal that was trying to run through him, and they called a penalty.
Q: So, in your mind, that wasn't him doing a little extra then?
A: I'm not going to say that. That's what they called.
Q: The defensive line today – you've got a bunch of undrafted free agents. Guys who hadn't played reps. Obviously, you look at the matchup going in with (Saints running back Alvin) Kamara. You had to be concerned. Those guys seemed to play their you-know-what off. Talk about those guys up front.
A: They battled. I'm proud of them. The four of those guys (Elijah Garcia, Cory Durden, Casey Rogers and Elijah Chatman) – they were in there. Took this one hard. They were battling. They got an opportunity. Again, we did a few different things defensively, front-wise, to try to mix things up on them. Those guys battled. I'm proud of the way those guys competed.
Q: Were you aware of the plane that flew over before pregame? There was a chartered plane, similar to the '78 (plane fly over), that was imploring (Giants owner) John (Mara) to fix the mess kind of thing. Were you aware of that pregame at all?
A: No.
Q: What do you think when you hear that – that there's a plane that said, "Mr. Mara, please fix this dumpster fire,"?
A: I'd say look, we've won two games. So, I'm not happy either.
Q: First half, that scramble by (quarterback Drew) Lock, where he scrambled right into double coverage, essentially. Afterwards, the cameras caught you saying, "You have to run straight." Is that what you said? And how would you evaluate Drew Lock's performance today?
A: I'll go back and look at it. I think the play you're referring to was third down, so just trying to make sure we know where the sticks are and get the first down to get a new set of downs.
Q: What was the point of putting in (quarterback) Tommy (DeVito) in for that one snap?
A: We had a few plays for Tommy this game. We only got to the one. It happened to be a kind of zone read, but it wasn't just all zone reads. It was a few plays in there.
Q: Why wasn't (wide receiver) Malik (Nabers) more involved in the first half? I think he only had two targets.
A: Again, we try to get everybody involved. I think we only had three catches – or three completions – in the first half.
Q: Why was the passing game so difficult really until the last couple of drives?
A: I think we had some drops. I don't know how many. Obviously, could've done a better job in certain areas – whether it's protection, reads, throws, calls, whatever it may be. It's a collective thing. Put it on me.
Q: What's your message to the team now in this final stretch here?
A: Just disappointed after this game. I thought they battled their tails off. I was proud of the way they competed. And we came up short, and it's tough. You put everything into it, and you lose a game there at the end. There's plenty of plays that could've made a difference. But we came up short.
Q: For the fans that are calling for a sweeping change, flying those planes over, what would be your argument against what they're calling for? What would be your argument for staying the course here?
A: I'm disappointed we have two wins. So, we're just going to keep on grinding it out and try to keep developing these young players and get ready to play a great team next week.
Q: Does that embarrass you that it happened at the stadium today?
A: Yeah, I'm just disappointed that we lost this game.
Quarterback Drew Lock
Q: What did the x-rays show?
A: Nothing, just a couple bumps and bruises for right now.
Q: More testing to come?
A: Nah, just going to look at some stuff in the morning, but no, feel good.
Q: Why do you think it was tough to generate early and then what do you think you found late?
A: Just missed some easy ones. It's one of those halves where you're going to go back and be frustrated. They were giving us some stuff and just didn't maximize the opportunities they gave us. You know as the quarterback and how I feel, it's the classic shooting myself in the foot. Lots of plays where we had opportunities and didn't take them, didn't make them.
Q: Did you feel you left some plays on the field?
A: Absolutely, especially in the first half. I've just got to be better coming out. Turned it on a little bit in the second half. But it's easy when it's normal ball, when it's not down trying to come back. We, not we, I have got to be better in that first half.
Q: What goes through your mind when you get to the point of being able to provide a comeback in the final two minutes and then see that field goal gets blocked?
A: For me, it's, yeah, whatever, that was one play and a lot that I felt like I – the guy with the ball in my hands – could have made a difference earlier in the first half. That's football, but you try to minimize those, and I think there was too many of them today.
Q: What did you see down in the red zone at the end of the game there when you were trying to score? A couple incompletions. What were you guys trying to do? What did you see with their defense?
A: They were giving us a lot of Tampa on that final drive and flipped a couple guys around in the huddle—put (Giants WR) Wan'Dale (Robinson) at three, (WR Malik) Nabers at the x, try to get it to him on the boundary safety. They gave me Tampa, Wan'Dale did a great job of getting around 56 (Demario Davis), put a low ball to Wan'Dale and guy made a good play on that, got it down. You know the last play it was, we got the field goal, they're going to be playing off, can't get tackled in bounds. if we do, we better get up on the ball. So at that point, it was endzone, incomplete or out of bounds and ended out of bounds.
Q: How do you get up from some of these hits?
A: That's football. You know, again, I'll go back and watch it and I'll say that I probably brought myself into a couple and a couple happened in the game and that's what you're prepared for. You're prepared to get hit a couple times at quarterback. Shoot, if there's no grass stains on a jersey, I feel like I didn't do anything today. So, got a couple and just keep chugging.
Q: Were you aware of the plane flying over the stadium pregame carrying a message: Mr Mara, fix this dumpster fire…
A: No, I was not. No, pretty focused on the game, I guess. Did not see it. That's going to pretty far lengths to try and take a message but no, I did not see it.
Q: What do you think about that as a player?
A: In one ear, out the other. Not going to affect me tonight. Not going to affect me tomorrow. Got to come in. It's not going to affect any of us. Got to come back to work. We've got another game Sunday against a really good football team and if we're worrying about that, they'll come in and get after us.
Q: You mentioned the (Baltimore) Ravens. How do you turn the page on a game like this and get ready for a team like the Ravens?
A: Yeah, just being a resilient group. Shoot, when you're 2-11, you've got to be resilient. You're going out there with pride, with passion for the game. Love the game and you're going to come out there and give everything you've got and just try to taste that win again. Get one of those, Mondays feel good, the whole week of practice feels good. Got to keep grinding, keep pushing, keep battling. That locker room is tight – it's one of the closest locker rooms I've ever been in. Zero finger pointing. It's nice to be in that and I think guys have handled this the best they could and we're going to continue to handle it and try to get a win here in these last couple of games.
Q: I know it's early, but did (Giants HC Brian) Dabs (Daboll) say you're going next week?
A: Nothing yet, nothing yet.
Q: You said how tight the locker room is. How about the messages as far as from the coaching staff? Do the players in that locker room still believe in the message that's coming from the coaching staff?
A: I do. I do believe that.
Q: You, Drew, or everybody kind of does?
A: Everybody. Because, shoot, what they're saying is true. You go out there and bust ass for four quarters, these little details keep sneaking in and that was a game where the defense goes out and plays their butt off the whole game and we didn't put enough points on the board. The messages are all true, there's no trying to pull the wool over our eyes in there. Everything that's coming out of Dabs' mouth is true and we've got to keep pressing, keep going.
Kicker Graham Gano
Q: From your vantage point, could you see what happened on the blocked kick at the end of the game?
A: I saw it on film already. They just executed it well. When that's executed as well as they did, it's hard to stop. So, I don't think you can blame our guys at all on that. They just made a good play. They got great athletes on their side as well. Felt really good off my foot. Thought I hit a good ball. But that's just a tough play to stop.
Q: Was it more of a penetration that they got or height? Did somebody just get a hand up?
A: They just pushed our line down; same thing we did in Seattle. It's a tough play to stop. There's really nothing much to it. They made a really good play.
Q: Is that something that you prepare for though?
A: It doesn't really… It's nothing I can control. I just control hitting a good ball and getting good elevation on it. I feel like I did hit a good kick.
Q: What goes through your mind when you realize what happened?
A: Nothing. It's a blocked kick. It sucks. Nothing I can do to control that. It's frustrating. I think it's frustrating for our team. Especially working so hard to come back like that. So many guys had big plays and we worked really hard at coming back and it's tough to have a game end that way.
Outside Linebacker Brian Burns
Q: Could you take us through the swing of emotions from the time you guys are able, defensively, to get the ball back for your offense, they drive down the field, and then the field goal gets blocked that would've sent it to overtime.
A: Yeah, that was something. When we got lined up for the field goal, me, KT (Kayvon Thibodeaux) and some of the other outside linebackers were talking about what we were going to when we go back out there and get a chance to go back out there when we got another chance to rush and close out the game. We just never got that shot, So, it was a little surprising.
Q: With all these losses, is that a little hard to believe?
A: Yeah, that was a tough one. That was a tough one, especially when you're getting excited to go back in there and win it in overtime. But could never get there. So, tough one.
Q: A couple of things you did defensively that I think were very high marks: you got to (Saints quarterback Derek) Carr, two sacks, which doesn't happen often. And you also held (Saints running back Alvin) Kamara to under 50 yards rushing in a game. That's pretty impressive, too.
A: Yeah, I'm proud of the guys that stepped up with Dex (defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence) being out, (inside linebacker) Bobby (Okereke) being out. They did a great job. Those young guys, some of them never even played in a game. So, I'm extremely proud how they handled themselves today.
Q: You probably didn't even realize it because it was pregame, but there were some fans that chartered a plane prior to the game with one of those message things on the back – and flew around the stadium basically imploring (Giants owner) Mr. (John) Mara to, I think the word was, 'Please, fix the dumpster fire.' What's your reaction when you hear somebody go to that length?A: They wrote on the thing.
Q: Yeah, you know those planes with the carry-on banner.
A: Oh, the banner.
Q: It kind of flew around the stadium.
A: I didn't see it. I really still don't know what you're talking about. But I don't really have a comment on that.
