Coach Ben McAdoo updates the status of WRs Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall:

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – While short on specifics, Ben McAdoo's message today was that neither Odell Beckham, Jr. nor Brandon Marshall were seriously hurt last night in the Giants' preseason loss in Cleveland.

Beckham injured his ankle in the second quarter and did not return. Marshall hurt his shoulder in the first quarter but stayed in the game.

"Odell has an ankle and we'll see how he responds to treatment," McAdoo said. "Brandon has a shoulder and, again, we just have to see how these two guys respond to treatment. We just had them in here for a treatment session and we'll take it day by day."

McAdoo said Beckham underwent an MRI, and X-rays on Marshall's shoulder were negative.

Beckham was hurt on the second play in the second quarter of the Giants' 10-6 loss. He caught an 18-yard pass from Eli Manning on the right side, and was immediately hit in the legs by cornerback Brien Boddy-Calhoun. Beckham walked to the sideline and then to the locker room without assistance, but did not return to the game. The Giants subsequently announced that Beckham had a sprained ankle.

Marshall's injury occurred on the Giants' second possession. Manning's pass to him deep down the right sideline fell incomplete, but rookie safety Jabrill Peppers hit Marshall on his left shoulder. Manning threw one more pass to Marshall, who caught it for a two-yard gain on the final play of the half.

Asked if he had long-term concerns about either player, McAdoo said, "Again, we'll take it day by day and see how they respond to treatment."

The Giants return to practice tomorrow and next play Saturday night against the Jets. McAdoo obviously would like to see his entire offense on the field for the game in which the starters get their longest stint of the preseason.

"I know what Odell brings to the table," McAdoo said. "He's a tremendous player, one of the best in the league. Tremendous competitor. But if you have a chance to get everyone out there playing together, playing with each other, you do it. If you don't, you don't. That's a medical decision."

More news from McAdoo's conference call:

*Wide receiver Tavarres King aggravated the ankle injury that kept him out of the Aug. 11 preseason opener vs. Pittsburgh. King caught one pass for seven yards.

Cornerback Michael Hunter, who received substantial early playing time because Eli Apple has been sidelined with an ankle injury, is in the NFL concussion protocol.

*McAdoo was mostly pleased with the preseason debut of Manning, who completed 10 of 14 passes for 80 yards.

"I thought he had a fairly good showing," McAdoo said. "A couple throws I think he'd like to have back, but that's a part of it, especially in preseason, you're going to miss some throws. I thought he had some clean reads out there. I'd like to see him complete the shallow cross to (wide receiver) Sterling Shepard in the red zone. But, it's the first outing for him, first outing for a lot of guys out there playing together in a game this season. So, we look to build upon it."

*The Giants rushed for 65 yards on 20 carries, a 3.3-yard average. In two games, they have 138 rushing yards in 43 attempts, a 3.2-yard average.

"I think we had some opportunities to have some runs come out," McAdoo said. "Whether we run the ball well or not, it's not only the offensive line. Everybody's included. It takes all 11 to be successful there."

*In the competition for the backup quarterback job, Geno Smith took 29 snaps, while Josh Johnson got six. Rookie Davis Webb did not play.

"That's just the way it went last night," McAdoo said. "We wanted to keep it fairly even, but the way the game broke down, the way the game worked itself out there at the end of the first half and at the beginning of the second half, that's just the way it went and we're going to continue to evaluate it. We don't have a timetable on it and we'll let those guys keep going, competing."

Smith completed 11 of 17 passes for 79 yards, and threw an interception deep in Cleveland territory.

"I thought he made some nice throws, made some nice decisions," McAdoo said. "He completed the ball, we just have to eliminate the critical errors in the ball game."
