Odell Beckham Jr. talks about working with new head coach Pat Shurmur:
MINNEAPOLIS – Odell Beckham, Jr. said Saturday he is pleased with his continuing recovery from the fractured ankle and subsequent surgery that cost him the final 11 games of the 2017 season.
"I don't know a percentage, but I'm actually doing really good," the Giants' three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver said in a brief interview at the NFL Honors awards show at the University of Minnesota. "They tell me to slow down because I've been out for so long, and I'm ready to go, I'm ready to go. Now I can see where the mental part comes in as far as being patient, and knowing you can't push too much right now, or you need to push more. It's finding that balance. I'm actually doing really good."
Beckham was injured in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 8. Asked if he will thinks he'll participate in the Giants' spring drills, he said. "To be ready for the first game is all I'm worried about, so I can be a hundred percent."
Beckham and head coach Pat Shurmur came away with positive feelings for each other after their initial meeting.
"I've spoken to him, and he's really eager when we can get to doing football to get going," said Shurmur, who also attended NFL Honors. "It was a good conversation. I remember him really well from the process when we were thinking of drafting him. It's just a matter of getting reacquainted at some point and getting going."
"It's very good," Beckham said. "I think we have an understanding of what we want to do. And just to talk to him and be with a guy who loves football. I watched what he did in Minnesota and it was exciting. I'm definitely looking forward to that."
Asked if he can thrive in Shurmur's offense, Beckham said, "It seems pretty obvious. Watching what they do and putting myself in that situation, I know that I'd be doing some pretty good things for our team."
OBJ had a similarly successful introduction to new general manager Dave Gettleman.
"It was great," he said. "He seems like a straight shooter. We only met once, but from a conversation you can have an understanding of who a person is. It seems like this is going to be a very fun year."
