Clubs must reduce their active rosters to a maximum of 53 players by 4 p.m. ET. Then it's all systems go for Week 1. Wearing their "Century Red" uniform, the Giants will kick off the 100th season in franchise history with a visit from the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Sept. 8.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE

Starting lineup:

  • QB Tommy DeVito
  • LT Joshua Ezeudu
  • LG Jake Kubas
  • C John Michael Schmitz
  • RG Jalen Mayfield
  • RT Evan Neal
  • RB Dante Miller
  • WR Isaiah Hodgins
  • WR Allen Robinson II
  • TE Jack Stoll
  • TE/FB Jakob Johnson

Schmitz, who missed time earlier this summer because of a shoulder, suffered an ankle injury in the first half and did not return. Austin Schlottmann replaced him.

Injuries plagued the Giants throughout the night. Neal, seeing his first game action since Nov. 9, left the game in the second quarter with an ankle injury. He was originally listed as "questionable" to return.

The Giants surrendered eight sacks for the game, including a sequence of DeVito going down on three straight plays in the middle of the second quarter.

Brian Daboll called the offensive plays once again. He was asked earlier in the week if that will be the case once the regular season begins. "We're moving in that direction," he responded. "Take next week and ultimately make the decision here before 16 days."

Wide receiver John Jiles had the Giants' long reception of the game, a 21-yarder on which he showed his hurdling ability.

Signed nine days ago, running back Joshua Kelley had the Giants' longest run of the game on a 19-yarder. He finished the night with 40 yards on eight carries while Dante Miller ran 14 times for 45 yards. But it was DeVito, a quarterback, who led the way on the ground with 48 yards, including a 17-yard keeper.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE

Starting lineup:

  • OLB Boogie Basham
  • DL Timmy Horne
  • DL Casey Rogers
  • OLB Benton Whitley
  • LB K.J. Cloyd
  • LB Darrian Beavers
  • DB David Long Jr.
  • CB Alex Johnson
  • CB Breon Borders
  • CB Darnay Holmes
  • DB Clayton Isbell

Outside linebackers Tomon Fox and Benton Whitley left a good final impression with three quarterback hits apiece. Fox was credited with one sack while Whitley had 1.5.

Linebacker K.J. Cloyd racked up a game-high 16 tackles, including two for loss. The undrafted rookie out of the University of Miami signed with the Giants two weeks ago after beginning his NFL career with the Vikings.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS

Ayir Asante broke a long kickoff return at the joint practice in Florham Park and seemingly carried over that success to MetLife Stadium. The undrafted rookie opened the game with a 42-yard return, but it was spoiled when Tre Swilling stripped the ball and the Jets recovered. This came a week after the Giants turned the ball over five times in Houston.

Jude McAtamney handled kicking duties and made his two field goal attempts from 43 and 23 yards. A native of Ireland, McAtamney originally signed as a rookie free agent in May through the NFL's International Player Pathway Program. The former Gaelic football player spent the 2021 season at Chowan University in North Carolina and the 2022-23 seasons at Rutgers. In 2023, set a school record with 40 touchbacks on 60 attempts.
