The last time the Giants drafted a linebacker in the first round was in 1984 when they selected Carl Banks out of Michigan State. A year later, the Butkus Award was created to recognize the nation's best player at the position. Thirty-five years later, Isaiah Simmons became the first Clemson Tiger to win the award.
Could Simmons end the Giants' streak? Todd McShay thinks so in his first mock draft since the 2019 season ended. The ESPN senior writer and draft analyst projects him to the Giants, who hold the fourth overall pick. In McShay's latest scenario, Simmons is the third defensive player off the board in the top four, following Ohio State products Chase Young (defensive end) and Jeff Okudah (cornerback). Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow of LSU goes No. 1 to Cincinnati, according to McShay.
"I'd love to get second-year quarterback Daniel Jones a weapon on the outside here, but wide receiver is a deep group and offers plenty of midround options," McShay wrote. "And quite frankly, defense as a whole is a more serious problem for the Giants. Let's get them a do-it-all linebacker -- their first Round 1 'backer since 1984 (Carl Banks) -- who found his way into just about every statistical category on the Clemson stat sheet. Simmons is what every NFL team dreams of having at its disposal. He can rush the passer, he can stand up against the run and he can drop into coverage. With Markus Golden and his 10 sacks headed toward free agency, the athletic Simmons could help fill the void."
At Clemson, Simmons transitioned from safety in 2017 to the starting nickel/sam linebacker position in 2018. He was named the Butkus Award and the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in only his second season at the position. He finished his college career with 253 tackles (28.5 for loss), 10.5 sacks, 22 pass breakups, four interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown), five forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in 1,856 career snaps over 44 games (29 starts).
Simmons graduated in December 2019, earning his degree in sports communication on the same day he was named the sixth unanimous All-American in school history.
"Strong finishes to the college season upped some prospects' stock, and we learned a good deal about a few upperclassmen during January's Senior Bowl week," McShay wrote. "Still, there is much to study on this class, and there's a long way to go before team needs and preferences are finalized, with free agency right around the corner. And you'd better believe the combine and pro days will impact player rankings leading into April."

Below is a look at other mock drafts floating around right now. As you will see, Mel Kiper Jr. agreed with his colleague.
Pick: Isaiah Simmons, OLB, Clemson
Analysis: "An off-ball linebacker in the top five? Believe it -- Simmons is that good. He is the perfect run-and-cover linebacker for today's NFL, and he can do anything and play every down. Just look at his incredible stat line from 2019: 104 tackles, eight sacks, three interceptions and 16 total tackles for loss. The Giants have many needs, but Simmons is the type of defender who makes everyone around him better."
Pick: Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville
Analysis: "Dave Gettleman loves big, physical football players, and they don't get any bigger than Becton (listed at 6-foot-7, 369 pounds). He is a mauler in the run game, and he's shockingly nimble in pass protection."
Pick: Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
Analysis: "Dave Gettleman's affinity for the "hog mollies" could lead the Giants to add an edge blocker to protect their young quarterback."
Pick: Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson
Analysis: "Rare height, weight, speed and versatility to be deployed in a variety of positions. He's only scratching the surface of his upside."
Pick: Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
Analysis: "Wills is the most athletic tackle in a very athletic tackle class. He is a work in progress still in pass protection, but the strides he made toward the end of 2019 — when he allowed only four pressures over Alabama's final six games — have us encouraged."
Pick: Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
Analysis: "New head coach (and former Alabama assistant) Joe Judge will receive plenty of intel from his friends in Tuscaloosa on Wills, my top-ranked tackle in the draft."
Pick: Jedrick Wills Jr., OT, Alabama
Analysis: "New coach Joe Judge seemed to be channeling general manager Dave Gettleman when he vowed the Giants would employ an "old-school, physical mentality." That mentality might push them toward Wills, a surprisingly fleet-footed protector who erases opponents in the run game."
Pick: Jeff Okudah, CB, Ohio State
Analysis: "It pains me as a Jets fan to say it, but the Giants are building something pretty impressive. They'll have two young corners, the makings of a good defensive line, and lots of skill position talent."

Ohio State's Chase Young and Jeff Okudah and Alabama's Jerry Jeudy are among the potential top-10 prospects who have already stated their intentions. Projected No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow is a senior. As is Oregon's Justin Herbert, who might be the second quarterback off the board."
Pick: Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
Analysis: "A two-year starter at right tackle for Alabama, Wills is a dominant run blocker who also improved significantly as a pass blocker in 2019."

Pick: Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama
Analysis: "While most casual fans are familiar with Tagovailoa by now, several may not be as familiar with Alabama wide receiver Jerry Jeudy. This isn't the case for fans who watched him in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl on New Year's Day. Jeudy destroyed the Michigan defense, catching six passes for 204 yards and a touchdown. While this stat line may lead fans to believe that Jeudy is primarily a deep threat, his biggest asset may actually be his ability to generate separation with precision route-running. Even before Alabama's bowl game, Jeudy was trending as the top receiver in this draft class. He had little to gain by even playing in it, but his drive and determination should resonate with prospective NFL employers."
Pick: Jedrick Wills Jr., OL, Alabama
Analysis: "Wills is not only one of the best players on Alabama's roster, he's arguably the top offensive lineman in this class. The right tackle quietly had an outstanding 2019 campaign and he'll upgrade a Giants offensive line in desperate need of some consistency."
Pick: Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama
Analysis: "While offensive line is the biggest need for the Giants, I can totally envision Dave Gettleman going offensive skill position player again as a way to help Daniel Jones. I have a feeling Jeudy is going to set the 40-yard dash on fire in Indianapolis."
Pick: Jedrick Wills Jr., OL, Alabama
Analysis: "They take Wills and can address the other spot later in the draft."
Pick: Isaiah Simmons, OLB, Clemson
Analysis: "The Giants also need to address defense with a stat-sheet stuffer, and a versatile linebacker is just what they need for their Patriots-tinged defense coordinated by Patrick Graham under Joe Judge. Simmons seemed to be all over the field at all times in college with great speed and range at 6-4, 230 pounds, and he also can get to the quarterback. He posted 104 tackles, 7 sacks, 16.5 tackles for loss and 3 interceptions in 15 games."
Pick: Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson
Analysis: "Slotting Isaiah Simmons is always a rather impossible task: You don't know exactly what position he's going to play or how it's going to look when he plays it."
Pick: Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
Analysis: "A few years ago New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman educated us on the term "hog mollies" or giant mammoth trench players who dominate games from the point of attack. Gettleman loves his hog mollies, and Jedrick Wills is one of them."
Pick: Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
Analysis: "Daniel Jones showed promise as a rookie, but he was sacked on 7.6 percent of his dropbacks and fumbled a whopping 18 times in 12 starts. As he enters his sophomore season, fortifying the offensive line in front of him should be a priority for general manager Dave Gettleman and Jedrick Wills' is a prospect I can see him falling in love with. Wills is an exceptional pass blocker with the power needed to generate vertical push in the run game. He can help Jones and star running back Saquon Barkley perform at their best."
Pick: Mekhi Becton, OT, Louisville
Analysis: "I thought my love for Mekhi Becton was bold when I sent him to Tampa Bay at No. 14 overall in my Mock Draft 4.0, and then NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah come over the top at the end of January and mocked Becton to the New York Giants. The more I've thought about it, yeah. Why the heck not? Dave Gettleman is still in control and the Giants have hired New England Patriots assistant Joe Judge to man the controls — he was in the house when the Patriots had success with Trent Brown. Given that's the comparison some are choosing to run with for Becton, there are enough dots to connect to justify the pick."
Pick: Jedrick Wills, OT, Alabama
Analysis: "It's not a "sexy" pick, but keeping Daniel Jones upright is an absolute must. Wills can help with that."
