Vote Kadarius Toney for Pepsi Rookie of Week

KADARIUS-TONEY

Giants rookie wide receiver Kadarius Toney had a breakout performance against the Cowboys in Week 5, catching 10 passes for 189 yards and adding one rush for seven yards.

Toney earned recognition for his big showing in Dallas as he was nominated for the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week Award. Fans can vote for the first-round pick, and the winner will be revealed later in the week.

Toney was honored by Pro Football Focus as well when the analytics site named the wide receiver to its Team of the Week and awarded him Rookie of the Week. Toney earned an elite 92.4 overall grade from PFF, including an amazing 93.3 receiving grade. This was the highest receiving grade among all wide receivers in Week 5.

The other nominees for this week's Pepsi Rookie of the Week Award include:

  • Houston Texans QB Davis Mills: 21 of 29 (72.4 percent) for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns
  • Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase: 6 receptions for 159 yards and 1 touchdown
  • Pittsburgh Steelers RB Najee Harris: 142 yards from scrimmage (122 rushing, 20 receiving), 1 rushing touchdown
  • Atlanta Falcons TE Kyle Pitts: 9 receptions for 119 yards and 1 touchdown
  • Buffalo Bills DE Gregory Rousseau: 5 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception

The 189 receiving yards set a new single-game Giants rookie record, topping Odell Beckham Jr.'s previous mark of 185 yards set in 2014. It was also the most yards in a game by a rookie wide receiver this season, and tied for the third-most receiving yards by any player in the NFL this season. Toney did this while playing 37 offensive snaps (54 percent) and running just 24 routes.

"It really felt special really just going out there and executing the game plan," Toney told the media Monday. "We worked on the plays over and over throughout the week and it just felt good to execute at a high level going out there."

89 of his 189 receiving yards against the Cowboys came after contact, while eight of the 10 receptions went for first downs. Toney also made three defenders miss with the ball in his hands, according to PFF.

The rookie is tied with Cardinals WR Rondale Moore for the second-most missed tackles forced on receptions among wide receivers with nine, trailing only Jaguars WR Leviska Shenault Jr.

"He's special. I think he showed what he is capable of doing. That was fun to see..." quarterback Mike Glennon said after the game. "You throw him a short pass and he takes it, you just don't see that at the NFL level very often, making guys miss like that. He's got a unique skill set that we are all finally seeing. I'm glad he is on our team...

"You just don't see guys make people miss like that in the NFL very often. There's just not many guys who can do this, be that quick. To have the day he had, hopefully it is just the beginning of what he is capable of doing."

After trading down nine slots in the first round of this year's draft and acquiring a 2022 first-round pick from the Chicago Bears, the Giants drafted Toney with the No. 20 overall selection.

Toney's 76.9 receiving grade from PFF currently ranks 21st among all wide receivers and 3rd among rookie receivers.
