It's that time of the year when players wait for a call from the office of an NFL general manager.
One lucky Giants fan recently lived that moment.
Robert Sutherland, a retired New York City fireman from North Bellmore, N.Y., recently picked up the phone and on the other line was the Giants' GM.
"This is Jerry Reese with the New York Football Giants, how are you today?" Sutherland heard.
No really, it's Jerry Reese, calling from the second floor of the Quest Diagnostics Training Center.
"I know the voice because I'm a big-time fan," he responded upon realizing it wasn't a ruse.
Sutherland was the winner of the Giants' Draft Day Experience, which includes presenting Big Blue's No. 1 Nike jersey to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the Giants' first-round pick in the upcoming draft on May 8. Sutherland will also carry the New York Giants New Era Draft Cap on the red carpet leading up to the event at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
"I'm a retired New York City fireman," he said after Reese explained the details. "I think I could do it."
All season-ticket holders in good standing were automatically entered into the drawing.
"This sounds unbelievable," he said. "You know what? I'm used to being around a lot of practical jokers with all these firemen… I'm going, 'All these people have season tickets. I don't know how this works out. This must be some kind of a setup here.'"
It wasn't. It was his lucky day.
