WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE
Down starting tackles Jermaine Eluemunor (quad) and Chris Hubbard (knee), the Giants were forced to shuffle their offensive line once again. Joshua Ezeudu made his second start of the season at left tackle while Evan Neal, who was questionable with a hip injury, remained at right tackle.
Wide receiver Malik Nabers, whose 75 receptions were the most in a player's first 10 games in NFL history, suffered a hip flexor injury in Thursday's practice. The Giants listed him as questionable, but the rookie was active on gameday. The sixth overall pick caught five passes for 79 yards on 10 targets.
Quarterback Drew Lock made his second consecutive start for the Giants, 25th overall of his career. Tommy DeVito, who was the emergency third quarterback last week while he dealt with a right forearm, served as the backup.
Lock did not have a completion on his first eight attempts. He finished 21 of 49 for 227 yards with one interception. He also led the Giants with 59 yards on the ground, including a 25-yard scramble into Saints territory late in a three-point game.
Left guard Jon Runyan suffered an ankle injury and was replaced by Aaron Stinnie in the second half. Center John Michael Schmitz then went down with a neck injury in the fourth quarter. Greg Van Roten slid over from right guard, where Jake Kubas took over.
Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. found the end zone for the second consecutive game and fifth time of his rookie season. The fifth-round pick punched in a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. It was set up by a 22-yard reception by Nabers, who also caught a tipped pass in the end zone on the ensuing two-point conversion to cut the deficit to three points with four minutes left in the game.
This week, wide receiver Darius Slayton was announced as the Giants' 2024 Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee. The award recognizes an NFL player for outstanding community service activities off the field as well as excellence on the field. Each of the 32 teams has a Man of the Year who is eligible to win the league award.
The New York Giants welcome the New Orleans Saints to MetLife Stadium for their Week 14 matchup.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE
Injuries have been mounting for the Giants since they last took the field. Two-time Pro Bowler Dexter Lawrence was placed on injured reserve after he suffered a dislocated left elbow in the Thanksgiving Day loss in Dallas. Lawrence was one of three defensive linemen hurt against the Cowboys. Rakeem Nuñez-Roches sustained a stinger in the second half and D.J. Davidson was limited to 10 snaps after hurting his shoulder. A week earlier, outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari (toe) was also placed on injured reserve.
Nuñez-Roches was one of three players ruled out on the Giants' final Week 14 injury report. The others were cornerback Deonte Banks (rib) and inside linebacker Bobby Okereke (back).
Rookie nickel cornerback Cor'Dale Flott (quad/knee) was added to the injury report on Saturday before the Giants ruled him out on gameday.
Second-year cornerback Tre Hawkins III notched his first career interception early in the third quarter. It was the Giants' first interception since rookie linebacker Darius Muasau grabbed one in the season opener.
After they led the league in the category for the first half of the season, the Giants recorded their first sack since Week 10 when Brian Burns took down Derek Carr at the two-minute warning in the first half. Outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux notched the second and final sack of the game for the Giants.
Inside linebacker Dyontae Johnson, who turned heads in training camp before he sprained his ankle in the preseason opener, was designated for return from injured reserve this week but was not activated. Johnson spent the entire 2023 season on the Giants' practice squad after joining the team as an undrafted rookie from Toledo, where he played in 57 games across five seasons. He has yet to appear in a regular-season game in the NFL.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS
Jamie Gillan angled two punts perfectly toward the sideline in the first half, bouncing them out of bounds inside the 10. He finished the day with four of his eight punts downed inside the 20.
The Giants thwarted a fake punt attempt midway through the second quarter. Jamaal Williams took a direct snap but was stopped short of the first down by Patrick Johnson and Dane Belton. The Giants took over on downs at the Saints 48.
A holding penalty by Greg Stroman Jr. negated a 56-yard punt return touchdown by Ihmir Smith-Marsette late in the first half.
Making his NFL debut, defensive lineman Casey Rogers blocked a 60-yard field goal attempt by Blake Grupe at the end of the first half.
An unnecessary roughness penalty on rookie offensive lineman Jake Kubas negated a 48-yard field goal by Graham Gano early in the fourth quarter.
Gano's 35-yard, potential game-tying field goal attempt was blocked by Saints defensive tackle Bryan Bresee with eight seconds remaining.
