AT A GLANCE
The Giants committed three turnovers, two of which the Falcons returned for touchdowns, en route to a 34-7 loss on the road. The 10th consecutive defeat dropped the Giants to 2-13 while the Falcons, who started rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. for the first time, improved to 8-7.
UP NEXT
The Giants wrap up the 2024 home slate with a visit from the Indianapolis Colts, who were 6-8 heading into their Week 16 matchup with the 3-11 Tennessee Titans. The Giants will conclude the season with a trip to Philadelphia.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE
With two catches in Atlanta, Malik Nabers broke the Giants' rookie record, surpassing the mark of 91 set by Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014 and tied by Saquon Barkley four years later. Nabers and Beckham are the only players with at least 90 receptions in their first 12 career games in NFL history.
Quarterback Drew Lock started his third game in a Giants uniform and first since Week 14, when he sustained heal and left elbow injuries. Tommy DeVito, who cleared the concussion protocol, served as the backup. Tim Boyle, meanwhile, was the emergency third quarterback after he threw the Giants' first touchdown since Week 9 in relief of DeVito last Sunday.
The Giants once again had to shuffle their offensive line with left guard Aaron Stinnie unable to play because of a concussion. Undrafted rookie Jake Kubas started in his place.
Rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr., a converted wide receiver, scored the first points of the game seven seconds into the second quarter on a toe-tapping touchdown catch in the back of the end zone. The Giants did not score again.
After a Falcons field goal, Atlanta took the lead on the Giants' next possession thanks to a 55-yard interception return touchdown by safety Jessie Bates III. Two drives later, Lock lost a fumble on a strip-sack and the Falcons took a 17-7 lead into halftime. Things didn't get much better after the break. Lock threw another interception on the opening possession of the second half, which linebacker Matthew Judon returned 26 yards for a touchdown.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE
The Giants spent the week "catching up" on their film study of Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr., the rookie eighth overall pick who was announced as the starter in place of veteran Kirk Cousins. In his first NFL start, the lefty Penix completed 18 of 27 passes for 202 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.
The Giants lost another starter and captain on defense when inside linebacker Bobby Okereke was placed on injured reserve. The sixth-year veteran, who did not miss a snap last season, has not played since Week 13 due to a back injury.
The Giants did get reinforcements back in their secondary, with Deonte Banks (three games), Dru Phillips (two games) and Cor'Dale Flott (two games) returning after they missed time with injuries.
Flott intercepted a Penix pass that went off the hands of Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts in the end zone late in the first half. It was Flott's first interception of the year, second of his career, and third for the Giants this season.
Falcons running back Bijan Robinson recorded his 11th game of the season with at least 100 yards from scrimmage as part of a two-touchdown performance.
The New York Giants traveled to Atlanta for their Week 16 matchup against the Falcons.
