AT A GLANCE
With just 119 yards on offense, the Giants fell to the Eagles 28-3 at MetLife Stadium. The Giants dropped to 2-5 on the season while the Eagles improved to 4-2.
UP NEXT
The Giants have an extended break ahead of a Monday night game in Pittsburgh, where the 4-2 Steelers will host back-to-back primetime game. First is a matchup with the 2-4 Jets on Sunday Night Football.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE
Left tackle and three-time captain Andrew Thomas will miss the remainder of the 2024 season because of a Lisfranc injury he suffered last Sunday night against the Bengals. He underwent season-ending surgery and was placed on injured reserve. Up to that point, the Giants' five starting offensive linemen had played every offensive snap together.
Third-year pro Joshua Ezeudu stepped in for Thomas at left tackle while the rest of the line stayed the same. It was the former third-round pick's eighth career start (six at left tackle and two at left guard).
Wide receiver Malik Nabers returned to the field after missing two games with a concussion. When he was injured late in the fourth quarter against Dallas on Sept. 26, Nabers led the league in targets and catches and was second in yards. On the first play of his first game back, Daniel Jones hit him for a 13-yard gain. The rookie finished with four catches for 41 yards, both season lows.
Jones finished 14 of 21 for 99 yards, the fourth-lowest total of his career as a starter. Backup Drew Lock entered with 11:26 left in the game while the Giants trailed 28-3.
The Giants gave up five sacks in the first half alone and eight total. Their previous high for a game this season was five in the opener at home against Minnesota.
Running back Devin Singletary also returned to the lineup after missing two games with a groin injury. In his place, Tyrone Tracy Jr. became the second Giants rookie – and first running back – with 237+ scrimmage yards in his first two career starts in the Super Bowl era. Wide receiver Mike Friede had 245 in 1980. Neither could get much going on Sunday as the Giants totaled 76 yards on the ground, 20 of which came from the quarterback.
Following the Thomas news, the Giants signed veteran offensive tackle Chris Hubbard, who was inactive on Sunday. Hubbard, 6-4 and 295 pounds, has exactly 100 games of NFL experience, including six in the postseason. He played his first four seasons with the Steelers (2014-2017), the next five with the Browns (2018-2022), and one with the Titans (2023). Hubbard has started 58 games, 51 of which were at right tackle. He has also started four games at right guard and three as an extra lineman.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE
Despite missing practice time this week, defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence (hip), outside linebacker Brian Burns (groin), and safety Dane Belton (illness) were active against Philadelphia. All three were listed as questionable heading into Sunday.
Cornerback Adoree' Jackson appeared on Thursday's injury report with a neck issue and was ruled out for Sunday.
Saquon Barkley, the player with the most rushing yards in the history of MetLife Stadium, returned to his former home for the first time since signing with the Eagles. On his first touch, he was greeted by Lawrence, who served alongside Barkley as co-captains and had the running back as a guest at his wedding over the offseason, after a one-yard gain.
Barkley eventually broke through with a 55-yard run in the second quarter, setting up his own three-yard touchdown run a few plays later. He got going from there and finished with 176 yards on 17 carries.
Entering Week 7, the Giants' league-leading 26 sacks was their highest total through six games since they had 30 in 1985. The Giants were also on pace to finish the season with 73 sacks, which would easily break the franchise record of 68, set in 1985. The NFL single-season record is 72, set by the 1984 Chicago Bears.
Shane Bowen's unit kept up the pace with five sacks on Sunday by Lawrence (2.0), Burns (1.0), Azeez Ojulari (1.0), and Tomon Fox (1.0).
The Giants limited the Eagles to just one third-down conversion on 13 attempts, but Philadelphia was successful on all three of its fourth-down conversions.
Lawrence, a two-time Pro Bowler, has already established a career-high in sacks with 9.0 in seven games. His previous best was 7.5 in 2022.
Ojulari has three sacks in two games since Kayvon Thibodeaux landed on injured reserve after undergoing wrist surgery.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS
Left-footed punter Jamie Gillan missed his second consecutive game with a hamstring injury on his kicking leg. Matt Haack filled in and punted a career-high 10 times.
Greg Joseph, who missed both of his field goal attempts last week, made his lone try from 38 yards on Sunday.
