WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE
In heavy rain at MetLife Stadium, the Giants lost a handful of key contributors on offense due to injuries in the final game of the regular season. Left tackle Will Beatty fractured his leg, wide receiver Rueben Randle sprained his knee, and quarterback Eli Manning and wide receiver Hakeem Nicks both left with sprained ankles in the first half. Before leaving late in the second quarter, Manning completed 10 of 24 passes for 154 yards, an interception and a 24-yard touchdown to Jerrel Jernigan. The third-year wide receiver put together a big game for the third week in a row, leading the Giants with six catches for 90 yards in addition to the 49-yard rushing touchdown. Replacing Manning, backup Curtis Painter completed 2 of 8 passes for 11 yards with an interception.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE
The Giants took advantage of the sloppy conditions and forced four turnovers, two fumbles and cornerback Trumaine McBride's first two interceptions as a Giant. The Giants held the Redskins to just 251 total yards, including 62 on 16 carries from the NFL's fifth-leading rusher Alfred Morris. Justin Tuck, who had four sacks in the first meeting with Washington, had another impressive performance against the NFC East rival, notching two more sacks and forcing a fumble. Washington converted just 5 of 20 third downs and managed six points, tying its lowest total of the season.
WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT SPECIAL TEAMS
In a game that featured 17 combined punts, Steve Weatherford contributed eight of them for the Giants, landing four inside the 20-yard line. Meanwhile, Josh Brown added two more field goals but missed a 50-yard attempt in the second quarter, snapping his franchise record of 17 consecutive makes.
