EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants today waived safety Will Hill, who played in 24 games with 10 starts for the team over the past two seasons.
Hill was signed by the Giants as a free agent in 2012, and over the past two seasons, his statistics are 100 tackles (87 solo), two interceptions returned for 38 yards with a touchdown, five passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, plus 26 special teams tackles.
In 2012, Hill played in 12 games with no starts in his first NFL season. He contributed 30 tackles (26 solo), two passes defensed and a forced fumble on defense and tied for third on the team with 13 special teams tackles (10 solo), and had a fumble recovery. He missed four games (Oct. 14-Nov. 4) while serving a suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
In 2013, Hill played in 12 games with 10 starts. He missed the season's first four games while serving a suspension for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse. He made his season debut and first start vs. Philadelphia (10/6) with a career-high 11 tackles, all solo. He recorded his first career interception (of a Matt Barkley pass with 11 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter) at Philadelphia on October 27. Hill started at free safety at Washington (12/1), where he had seven tackles (five solo) and clinched the Giants' victory when he stripped the ball from wide receiver Pierre Garcon with 1:18 remaining after a six-yard gain on fourth-and-one. Hill made several big plays at Detroit (12/22), where he had nine solo tackles and an interception of a Matthew Stafford pass he returned 38 yards for a touchdown with 4:57 remaining. The score tied the game and the Giants won in overtime.
On Friday, the NFL announced that Hill is suspended without pay for the first six games of the 2014 regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.
A New Jersey native, Hill was named an All-American by USA Today and Parade, and was a two-time state Offensive Player of the Year at St. Peter's Prep in Jersey City, where he was a three-year starter at quarterback, safety and a returner on special teams. Hill played safety for three seasons at the University of Florida.
