Recap: Giants deliver primetime win at home

GIANTS-WIN-EAGLES

Still dressed in full uniform with his trademark eye black on the right side of his face, Jaxson Dart walked down from the podium after his postgame press conference and didn't know exactly where to go next.

He headed for one door. It was the wrong one. Giants communications manager Maddi Lewis noticed he was about to walk into another dead end and then redirected the rookie quarterback to the correct way back to the locker room.

Dart is still discovering his new NFL home at MetLife Stadium. Fans, meanwhile, could get used to what is behind door No. 6.

With a 34-17 victory over the Eagles on Thursday night, Dart improved to 2-0 as a starter at home.

But he didn't do it alone. Cam Skattebo, a fellow rookie, ran for three touchdowns as part of a 172-yard rushing performance by the offense.

"We feel like anytime we go out there on the field, anybody we're playing against, we have a chance to win," Dart said. "Doesn't matter what Vegas says. It doesn't matter what the spread is. I was watching Pat McAfee, they are talking about the point spread of who is going to win the game. We don't care about that stuff. We feel like we're confident to go out there, put on a good performance, and win games."

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN…

Cornerback Dru Phillips recovered a fumble by Eagles running back A.J. Dillon after a tackle by safety Dane Belton and linebacker Bobby Okereke. The Giants took over with 6:50 to play and rushed eight times to get to the two-minute warning, after which Dart kneeled in the victory formation.

YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS

Cornerback Cor'Dale Flott intercepted Jalen Hurts inside the Giants 10-yard line and returned it 68 yards. It turned the tables on a drive that could have potentially cut the Eagles' deficit to one possession. Instead, the Giants scored a touchdown to take a 17-point lead.

"Have to be aggressive," coach Brian Daboll said of the all-out blitz on the play. "I told [defensive coordinator] Shane [Bowen] to be aggressive. Don't hold anything in your holster. Go after them. Thought he did a good job of mixing things up. Disguising some stuff. Again, that's a good football team. That's a damn good football team. They're going to make plays."

The Giants had two takeaways and no turnovers on Thursday night. Four days prior, they turned the ball over on five consecutive drives to spoil a double-digit lead in New Orleans.

"When you play good situational football, you don't turn it over, we didn't have any turnovers, hell of a lot better than five last week, then you create turnovers," Daboll said. "What a play by Flott. Down there, to get it. We talked about it last week. He was going back down south. I said he owed me one. He was going to get one down there. What a big play in a big moment. Again, I love these guys. They grind. It's not always been easy. It won't be easy. We'll go back to work on Monday. Coaches will go back to work tomorrow. I'm sure they're not happy about that."

STREAK BUSTERS

Heading into Week 6, the Giants had lost: 10 consecutive Thursday games, four straight at night and eight in a row against NFC East teams.

"I understand the most important thing for everybody is winning," Dart said. "As competitors, that's how we feel, too. I feel like this city is starving for that. We are starving for that. We hate losing. It's the worst feeling in the world. We just try to do our best, regardless of what outside noise is, we try to keep everything internal between us. I have all the confidence in the world in every single player on this team. We've just got to try to do our best to rally and stay consistent."

NOTABLE

The Giants entered Thursday night ranked last in the NFL in red zone touchdown efficiency but converted all three drives inside the 20 to touchdowns against the Eagles. The Giants also converted 11 third downs, their most in a game since doing it twice in 2014. They did so without Darius Slayton, who was ruled out with a hamstring injury, and Malik Nabers, who is out for the season due to a torn ACL. The Giants had to call up veteran Lil'Jordan Humphrey, who led the team with eight targets and caught four of them for 55 yards.

"I would say that's the other thing, next guy stepping up," Daboll said. "We had someone who was on the practice squad. We had Jalin Hyatt out there who hasn't played a lot for us. You're down Nabers, you're down Slayton. No excuses. Just go to work. Even on a short week, that was somebody that I know Jaxson had a lot of confidence in throwing to him from the preseason. He had a lot of reps with him. We talked about that. I felt comfortable with it. He did a good job."

On the other side, Philadelphia converted just one third down in nine attempts.

QUOTABLE

"He leads by his play, he leads by his words, he leads by his emotion, he leads by his loose plays. Glad he's my quarterback, our quarterback. Again, he's a rookie. As one of my mentors once said, let's not give him a gold jacket right now. Coach [Bill] Parcells. But he's a good young player to work with." -- Daboll on Dart

INJURY REPORT

Right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor was limited throughout the shortened week due to a back injury but hasn't missed a start yet. He kept intact an offensive line that has now started the same five players for the fourth consecutive week (left tackle Andrew Thomas started Week 3 but played only 28 snaps in his first game back). However, center John Michael Schmitz left midway through the third quarter with a concussion and nose injury. Austin Schlottmann took his place.

Running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. had four carries for six yards in his first game since suffering a shoulder injury in Week 3.

Defensive lineman D.J. Davidson left with a knee injury but returned to the game, as did quarterback Jaxson Dart, who was evaluated for a concussion.

The Giants had ruled out three players heading into the game: wide receiver Darius Slayton (hamstring) and linebackers Swayze Bozeman (ankle) and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (hamstring).

WHAT THE WIN MEANS FOR THE GIANTS

The Giants are 2-4 and will see the Eagles again in just 17 days at Lincoln Financial Field. In between, they travel to Denver on Oct. 19 for a matchup with the Broncos, who will be returning home from a game against the Jets in London on Sunday.
