Instant Analysis: Giants fall to Buccaneers, 30-7

FINAL-SCORE

AT A GLANCE

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers snapped a four-game losing streak with a 30-7 road victory over the New York Giants, who lost their sixth consecutive outing.

UP NEXT

The Giants (2-9) will play in Dallas on Thanksgiving for the second time in three seasons. The Cowboys won the first leg of the 2024 season series, 20-15, in Week 4.

The New York Giants welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to MetLife Stadium for their Week 12 matchup.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE OFFENSE

The week began with coach Brian Daboll announcing that Tommy DeVito would start in place of Daniel Jones and Drew Lock would serve as the backup. On Thursday, Daniel Jones addressed the media and read a prepared statement before taking questions. The following day, team president John Mara released the following statement:

"Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team. Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future."

Jones was officially waived on Saturday and the Giants also signed Tim Boyle (first to the practice squad and then to the active roster) to serve as the emergency third quarterback on gameday.

Left tackle Jermaine Eluemunor suffered a quad injury on the Giants' opening drive and was replaced by Chris Hubbard.

The Giants managed just 45 yards on 18 plays in the first half while failing to convert all four third downs and one fourth down. It resulted in a 23-0 halftime lead for the Buccaneers, who dominated the time of possession 19:57-10:03.

Rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers, who appeared on Friday's injury report with a groin injury and was listed as questionable, suited up on Sunday. He did not have a target until the first drive of the second half, when he hauled in three passes for 42 yards. However, it ended when Tyrone Tracy Jr. took a direct snap and lost a fumble on first-and-goal at the Tampa Bay 5. It was the rookie running back's second turnover in as many games. The Buccaneers capitalized with a 12-play, 95-yard touchdown drive on the ensuing possession.

Nabers surpassed Puka Nacua (64) for the most receptions in NFL history by a player in his first nine career games.

DeVito took a hard hit with five minutes left in the fourth quarter and was replaced by Lock for one play.

WHAT WE LEARNED ABOUT THE DEFENSE

The Giants returned from the bye week with Kayvon Thibodeaux on the practice field. The third-year outside linebacker was activated from injured reserve, where he had been since Oct. 12. Thibodeaux suffered a wrist injury in the Giants' Week 5 victory at Seattle and underwent surgery. He has two sacks and seven quarterback hits in five games this season. Entering Week 12, the Giants were second in the NFL with 36 sacks behind the Denver Broncos, who had 39 with one more game played. They failed to record any sacks of Baker Mayfield on Sunday.

Azeez Ojulari, who had five sacks in Thibodeaux's absence, suffered a toe injury in the first half and did not return.

Tampa Bay averaged 7.4 yards per play for 17 first downs and 290 total yards in the first half alone.

The Giants allowed at least 140 yards rushing for the fifth consecutive game. They had allowed 773 in their previous four games.
