LG David Diehl vs. RDE/DT Justin Smith

In their 3-4 defense, the 49ers haven't allowed a 100-yard rusher in 30 games while giving up zero rushing touchdowns this season. A big part of that is the 6-foot-4, 285-pound Smith, whose 163 consecutive starts has earned him a trip to the Pro Bowl the last two seasons. Meanwhile, Diehl and the Giants rank 29th in the NFL in the run game (88.8 YDS/G).

RDE Osi Umenyiora vs. LT Joe Staley
The 49ers offensive line boasts three former first round picks, and Staley is one of them. The 28th overall pick out of Central Michigan in 2007 leads the unit that has allowed 19 sacks, tied for 13th in the NFL. On the other side, the Giants have the most sacks in the NFL (28), six of them coming from Umenyiora.

Special Teams Coordinators Tom Quinn vs. Brad Seely
From a shutdown punt unit to shuffling kick returners, there has been a lot of talk about the Giants' special teams this week, relatively speaking. Tom Quinn and his outfit will go up against one of the best in the business, Brad Seely, who has been working special teams in the NFL since 1989. In his first season with the 49ers, he has molded a solid team across the board. Led by Ted Ginn, they are third in the NFL in kickoff return average (28.8 yards) and fifth in punt return (12.5). Meanwhile, punter Andy Lee is second in the NFL in gross average (50.2) while David Akers has 24 touchbacks.
