Giants Friday Mailbag

Dear Michael:
Is there any chance the Giants have a letdown this week against the 49ers?

Cliff

Dear Cliff:
Not a chance. How can you have a letdown against a 7-1 team in your own conference, in a game that could give you a potential tiebreaker advantage should the teams meet in the playoffs?  Because San Francisco is an NFC team, you can argue strongly that this game is more important than the one last week in New England. And the 49ers are a very good team. If the Giants do let down, they could get run out of the building.

How much will Prince Amukamara play this week?

Bruce

Dear Bruce:

Frankly, my guess is – not at all. I'm just reading tea leaves here, because Tom Coughlin has said nothing definitive about his status. But has practiced little with the defense; most of his work is on the scout team. Coughlin said it was a matter of involving him with the idea of playing him Sunday. The coach added, "That has not been clarified for me." It sounds to me as if Amukamara's debut is at least another week away.

Dear Michael:

What made the difference in the Giants running game last week?

Kathleen

Dear Kathleen:

Not to spew a cliché at you, but much of it was simply better blocking. The offensive line opened some much-needed holes. And Brandon Jacobs ran more effectively than he had in the previous game. Remember, Jacobs was inactive for three weeks – two with a knee injury and one because of the bye. He was rusty when he returned against Miami. He was more like himself in New England. But let's not get carried away. The Giants would like to run for more than the 111 yards they got vs. the Patriots.

Michael:

What do you think of the Giants special teams play this year?

Morgan

Dear Morgan: It's improved, but not as good as the coaches would like. The coverage teams have been good and Lawrence Tynes and Steve Weatherford are having productive seasons. But the Giants still need more from the return game. They rank 22nd in the NFL in punt returns and 23rd in kickoff returns.Join other diehard Giants Fans!
