Jay Bromley had his weekend planned. He went out with his girlfriend tonight to rent the move, "Gravity." Tomorrow, he graduates from Syracuse University. That's also when the NFL Draft will be completed, with selections in rounds 4-7, which is when Bromley thought he'd get selected.

But the Giants forced Bromley to change plans, and he couldn't be happier. They selected the defensive tackle tonight in the third round, the 74th overall selection.

"The movie's been completely put on hold," Bromley said. "The movie's an afterthought now, to be completely honest."

Bromley grew up a Giants fan in Jamaica, Queens and is thrilled he'll play on a team that is not only his favorite, but has a proud tradition of great defensive line play.

"Oh, the home team, my favorite team," Bromley said on a conference call soon after his selection. "It's crazy, this is my favorite team – Big Blue. And then I get picked by them, that's crazy. It's amazing."

Bromley, 6-4 and 307 pounds, played in 50 games at Syracuse, where he was credited with 121 tackles (71 solo), 25.5 tackles for losses and 13 sacks, including 10 in 2013, when he was a senior captain for the Orange.

"He's big, he's got some two-gap ability, he can stand in there and hold the point of attack," general manager Jerry Reese said. "He's got speed, the guy ran 4.9 and some change at the combine, so he can get up the field and finish on the quarterback. He had 10 sacks. He can hold the point, he can run, he has some range to run lateral and make plays down the line of scrimmage.

"We think this kid has a lot of upside, 10 sacks from the inside position. Lots of things to like about the kid, long arms, all the things that you like for your defensive tackles to have."

Reese believes Bromley can join the tackle rotation immediately. The Giants lost their best defensive tackle from last season, Linval Joseph, who signed with Minnesota as a free agent. The team has veterans Cullen Jenkins and Mike Patterson, third-year pro Markus Kuhn and last year's second-round draft choice, Johnathan Hankins.

"This young man, Jay Bromley, of course, went to a great school," said coach Tom Coughlin, who, of course, played collegiate football at … Syracuse. "He played defensive tackle, had 10 sacks, which is really interesting. You stop and think about it, a kid playing basically a three technique (defensive tackle) who has 10 sacks, runs very well, he's quick, he plays hard. He's a captain of his football team, he's well-respected, he's a quiet guy. He's some, although you wouldn't tell by the answer on the phone that I just went through because (of the) yelling and screaming. And when they heard it was the Giants, being from Jamaica, Queens, they were very, very excited. It's fun to share in the excitement of someone who is truly, truly… it meshes geographically because this guy is very close to his mom, because he played at Syracuse, because he is a man that's worked very hard for what he's got and will be asked to work even harder because he's around the 310 mark. You'd like him maybe to be a little bit bigger than that and to get back in the weight room and work."

Bromley is very familiar with the Giants' legacy of great defensive linemen and is eager to join the unit.

"The defensive line, that's why I love the Giants," he said. "The defensive line back with Osi (Umenyiora) and (Michael) Strahan and it's like, 'Man, I grew up watching that.' When they beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl with the sacks they got and with the pressure, it's just so exciting, because I love to sack the quarterback and it's like that's what they do."

Bromley is the third player from Syracuse selected by the Giants in the last two drafts. Last year, they chose two of Bromley's former teammates, tackle Justin Pugh on the first round and quarterback Ryan Nassib on the fourth.

"I look forward to talking to these guys, get to go to a team I'm familiar with the boys I know," Bromley said. "I can't wait.
