Eisen's Mailbag: WR Jerrell Jernigan's role

Jerrell Jernigan looked solid the last few games of last year. Will he get a fair chance to start? I only ask because of all the hype on Odell Beckham.
-Fred

Dear Fred:
Jernigan will certainly have an opportunity to show that his performance in the final three games of the 2013 season was no fluke. But whether he starts to me is unimportant. Technically, "start" refers to whoever is on the field for the game's first offensive snap. The top two receivers will likely be Victor Cruz and Rueben Randle. Some games, the Giants will certainly have three receivers line up for their first offensive snap. Jernigan, Beckham and Mario Manningham are presumably the top contenders for that spot. If they're all healthy, they should all get a chance to contribute. I'm not sure how much it matters who is on the field for the first play.

What is John Jerry's status? Does he still have a chance to start Week 1?
-Jeremy

Dear Jeremy:
Jerry underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and missed the spring practices. The hope and expectation is he will be ready to work when training camp opens on July 21. Jerry is not currently projected as a starter, but after starting every game for Miami the previous two seasons, he might consider himself one. Assuming he is healthy, he will compete for a job like everyone else in camp. It's premature to guess if that will eventually land him in the starting lineup.
