I watched a couple of training camp practices in Albany and the preseason games and Matt Dodge has been very inconstant. I know he was a draft choice, but do you think he is assured a spot on the roster opening day?
Dear Dan:
Assured of a spot? I wouldn't say that. Dodge is a very promising young punter. He has a strong leg and he's improved dropping the ball near the goal line on shorter kicks, which is important to Tom Coughlin. He's also become a trusted holder for Lawrence Tynes. But as you mentioned, he has been inconsistent, though he was better last week in Baltimore. If I had to guess I would say Dodge will be the opening day punter, but I'm sure the Giants will see who is available after rosters are cut to the regular season limit of 53 players this week – just as they will do at every position.
Do you see any leaders evolving on the defense?
Dear Kevin:
I see several. Justin Tuck is exhibiting leadership qualities. Michael Boley has become more involved. And I think it's interesting that three newcomers: Keith Bulluck, Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant – have been leaders vocally and by example. I think the defense will have several forceful leaders.
How long will Aaron Ross be out and can Bruce Johnson handle the nickel corner role?
Dear Karen:
I don't know how long Aaron Ross will be sidelined – I'm not sure anyone does. Those plantar fascia injuries can be tough to predict. I'm sure Bruce Johnson can handle the nickel corner role, but Ross probably play it better. Remember, Ross was a first-round draft choice and he has played well when healthy. He was also likely going to be the punt returner, so the sooner he's back the better.
Tony from Brooklyn: "How has the rookie class come along during training camp?
Dear Tony:
The Giants have some impressive rookies, but the class lacks depth because both Chad Jones and Adrian Tracy are out for the season. Linval Joseph has played well at defensive tackle. Jason Pierre-Paul has had flashes, Mitch Petrus has come a long way and Matt Dodge could be the team's punter. And let's not forget Victor Cruz, who leads the NFL in receiving yards and touchdown catches this preseason. With Sinorice Moss on injured reserve, there appears to be a roster spot for Cruz. But as Tom Coughlin has pointed out, he must contribute on special teams.
