Cornerback Deonte Banks has been nominated for the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week for his performance in the Giants' Week 7 win over the Washington Commanders.
Banks registered the first interception of his NFL career while adding a season-high seven total tackles (five solo).
The interception was the rookie's big splash play as it put a stop to a Commanders' drive that was nearing midfield. But Banks came up with a few tackles in key situations that provided the defense with a significant boost.
The 22-year-old tackled Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin three yards shy of a first down on a third-and-nine deep in Giants territory. This led to a Washington field goal attempt, which defensive lineman Leonard Williams blocked. Banks also had good coverage of McLaurin on one of the Commanders' final plays of the game, forcing a fourth-and-five which the Giants stopped to seal the victory.
"It's a great win for us. Trying to turn it around now. Trying to build some momentum..." Banks said in the locker room after the win. "That's really what we want to do in this league is just win, no matter how bad or how good it is, just win the game."
Through seven games, Banks has five pass breakups, which ranks third on the team and is tied for the second-most among rookie cornerbacks.
The other players nominated for the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week include:
- QB Tyson Bagent, Chicago Bears
- WR Puka Nacua, Los Angeles Rams
- WR Josh Downs, Indianapolis Colts
- WR Jordan Addison, Minnesota Vikings
- RB Jahmyr Gibbs, Detroit Lions
