Debate: Who will be Eli's backup in 2013?

The Giants could have a spirited quarterback competition this summer. It just won't be for the starting job.

Eli Manning enters his 10th Giants season as secure as any quarterback in the NFL. The two-time Super Bowl winner and three-time Pro Bowler has started 135 consecutive regular-season games, the third-longest streak by a quarterback in NFL history. In 2012, Manning became the franchise leader in completions (2,612) and touchdown passes (211). He is second in passing (4,457) attempts and yards (31,527).

David Carr has been Manning's backup four of the previous five seasons (he was in San Francisco in 2010). He threw just three passes in the 2011 and 2012 seasons, but likes his role and the team. The Giants believe Carr is a good backup, because he has experience and can emulate both drop-back and option quarterbacks in practice.

But Carr must win the job from two other contenders. Curtis Painter, who started eight games for the 2011 Indianapolis Colts, is a younger veteran the Giants watched closely throughout the spring.

The Giants also have promising rookie Ryan Nassib, who they selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft after trading up six spots for the chance to secure him. At Syracuse, Nassib started all 38 games from 2010-2012 and completed 791 of 1,312 yards (60.3 percent) for 9,190 yards, 70 touchdowns and 28 interceptions.

In 2012, Nassib led the Orange to an 8-5 record, including a 38-14 rout of West Virginia in the Pinstripe Bowl. He earned All-Big East Conference and Academic All-Big East first-team honors while becoming only the fourth player in conference history to throw for over 9,000 yards in a career. A team captain, Nassib set school single-season records by completing 294 of 471 passes (62.4 percent) for 3,749 yards, 26 touchdowns.
