For the first time in nearly a month, Daniel Jones was a full participant at Giants practice on Wednesday.
Jones has been sidelined for the last three games after suffering a neck injury during the Week 5 game in Miami. Despite returning to the practice field two weeks ago, the fifth-year quarterback had yet to get clearance for contact from team doctors until Sunday morning.
"I had been progressing last week," Jones said Wednesday. "I felt good about where I was headed. I didn't know exactly how it was going to go Sunday before the game, but I felt good. I felt like I was progressing well."
On Wednesday, Jones took his normal practice reps ahead of Sunday's game in Las Vegas. Daboll said the quarterback is happy to be back.
"Normal practice…" the head coach said about Jones' workload. "He's been out here throwing so he'll have his full workload this week. Once he's cleared, he's cleared and ready to go."
"I'm excited," said the starting quarterback. "Excited to be back in the swing of things and going through the week preparing to play. So yeah, I'm excited to be back…
"I feel good. I feel recovered. I've had a few weeks here not playing, so I used that to stay in shape. But excited to be back."
Jones' return as the starting quarterback comes at a good time for the offense. Backup Tyrod Taylor, who filled in admirably for Jones in Weeks 6 and 7 before leaving Sunday's game early, is uncertain to play this weekend due to the rib cage injury suffered against the Jets. The 34-year-old quarterback did not partake in Wednesday's practice.
"Let's see how this meeting goes with the doctors," said Daboll. "Again, he says he's feeling better, but he's got to go meet with the doctor. That's what he's going to do right now."
Taylor's potential absence could create an opportunity for the team's other quarterbacks. Tommy DeVito was signed to the active roster on Tuesday. The undrafted rookie had been brought up from the practice squad for each of the last three games and was not eligible to be elevated to the roster again this season. DeVito did not register many pass attempts against the Jets (seven total), but he did score the team's lone touchdown on a six-yard run.
Taking Devito's spot on the practice squad is veteran Matt Barkley. Originally a fourth-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013, Barkley has spent time with nine teams over the last decade, including multiple stops in Arizona and Buffalo, before signing with the Giants Tuesday. Of his 19 career regular-season games, almost half of them came with the Bills while Daboll served as offensive coordinator, including his only career start. In that game, Barkley threw for 232 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 117.4 passer rating while leading the Bills to a 41-10 win over the Jets.
"Matt's had familiarity in what we do and understands our terminology," Daboll said. "Called a game, actually against the Jets I think, with Matt back in '18 or somewhere around there, pretty good result. But he's been around, he's been with us for a while, he knows our stuff. Again, we'll see where Ty's at and we'll go from there."
Jones is not the only player the offense hopes to welcome back to the lineup this week. The offensive line has been without left tackle Andrew Thomas since he suffered a hamstring injury in the season opener, while right tackle Evan Neal has missed the last two contests with an ankle injury. Both tackles were limited participants at Wednesday's practice and could potentially return against the Raiders.
"I think both of them have an opportunity to play," the head coach said about Thomas and Neal. "Again, we'll take that day by day and see where they are on Friday."
While the O-line might get one or two of its starters back this week, the status of one of the offense's top playmakers is unclear. Darren Waller had been a limited participant in practice last week due to a hamstring injury. The veteran tight end was then forced to depart Sunday's contest early because of his hamstring and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Waller did not practice on Wednesday.
"Waller's got a hamstring; we'll see where he's at," said Daboll. "He's not going to go today; we'll take him day by day, but you never know how hamstrings are, so we'll see where he's at by the end of the week."
"It's very frustrating, a little bit discouraging, like any human being would be in my position but no stranger to tough hands and tough circumstances, so I'm not one that's going to fold up right here," the veteran tight end added. "I'm going to do whatever I can and however much time I got left with this team this season, I'm going to give it all I got."
*The Giants made one deal ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline, sending defensive lineman Leonard Williams to the Seattle Seahawks for a 2024 second-round pick and 2025 fifth-round pick.
Williams was acquired by the Giants in a trade with the Jets ahead of the 2019 trade deadline for third- and fifth-round selections. The veteran defensive lineman totaled 22.5 sacks and 72 quarterback hits in 61 regular-season games with the Giants.
"Love Leo, a lot of respect for Leo," Daboll said. "I'd say that Seattle called (Senior Vice President/General Manager) Joe (Schoen) and Joe told me about it. Joe had a private meeting with Leo, those guys talked about it, good conversation and decided that's what we were going to do kind of on both ends. A lot of respect for Leo, certainly we'll miss him but have confidence in the guys (defensive lineman) A'Shawn Robinson and (defensive lineman Rakeem Nuñez-Roches) Nacho and those guys that we have that are playing his spot."
The head coach told reporters he addressed the locker room regarding the trade.
"I think you tell them how it went down; Joe wasn't actively shopping anyone," said Daboll. "Obviously, he fields calls as a general manager, so we have confidence in the guys that we have and let's go out there and have a good week."
*The Las Vegas Raiders made significant changes to the team's leadership late Tuesday night, relieving head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager David Ziegler of their duties as head coach and general manager, respectively. Champ Kelly is the interim general manager, while former Giants linebacker and Super Bowl champion Antonio Pierce was named interim head coach.
"I've been on the other side of that, too," Daboll stated. "When I was at Miami, (Buccaneers Head Coach) Todd Bowles took over. Again, you have to really focus on your team and getting prepared and watching all the games. You can only do so much. They didn't change coordinators in Miami, but I've been there on the other side of it, so we'll do our normal preparation and try to get ready to play our best game."
While Giants fans are plenty familiar with the former linebacker, Daboll has a relationship with Pierce as well. During his one year as the Alabama offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2017, Daboll took a trip to Long Beach Polytechnic High School in California to look at quarterback Matt Corral. Who was the head coach at Long Beach Poly at the time? None other than Antonio Pierce.
Daboll recalled that meeting Wednesday when he discussed going up against an interim head coach, but highlighted the importance of keeping the focus on themselves rather than the opponent.
"You're always going to try and prepare the best you can, but again, it's three days here and I can't say what they are going to do or not do," the head coach said. "I know AP (Raiders interim Head Coach Antonio Pierce), went down to – when I was looking at (quarterback) Matt Corral down there in California at a high school and he was the head coach. So, again, you prepare the best way you can. There is obviously a bunch of games to look at and get ready to play the game…
"I've built a friendship with him along the way the last few years, but again our focus has got to be on the field, players and schemes and do the best job we can."
*In his introductory press conference with the media Wednesday afternoon, Pierce confirmed reports that rookie Aidan O'Connell will be the team's starting quarterback moving forward, replacing veteran Jimmy Garoppolo.
"Look, he played against the Chargers," Daboll said a few hours earlier about the rookie quarterback. "Played fourth quarter, I don't know six minutes left or so when they were down 30 to whatever it was against the Bears. He played a lot in the preseason, was one of the highest rated passers. I think they played the 49ers, the Rams, Cowboys. So, there is enough tape on him and again, I've been in that situation. I'm sure they are going to add their own wrinkles. I can't speak for the Raiders or how they are going to do things, but they had a late Monday night game, this went down, so in 3 or 4 days you got to get ready to play a game. So, there is a lot of tape out there. Certainly, you make adjustments, but evaluate the tape and get ready to play."
