LAS VEGAS -- To commemorate Super Bowl LVIII, we bring you 58 facts and tidbits about Super Bowls, the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowls and, of course, the Giants.
I - This is the second Chiefs-49ers Super Bowl. Four years ago in Super Bowl LIV, Kansas City trailed by 10 points with seven minutes remaining but scored three touchdowns within a span of 5:01 to win the game, 31-20.
II - The Chiefs are 3-2 in Super Bowls, including 2-1 under current coach Andy Reid. Kansas City is attempting to complete the ninth instance in which a team repeats as Super Bowl champions, and the first since the 2003-2004 New England Patriots. This is the longest drought in NFL history without a repeat champion.
Back-to-Back Super Bowl Champions
1966-67 Packers I, II
1972-73 Dolphins VII, VIII
1974-75 Steelers IX, X
1978-79 Steelers XIII, XIV
1988-89 49ers XXIII, XXIV
1992-93 Cowboys XXVII, XXVIII
1997-98 Broncos XXXII, XXXIII
2003-04 Patriots XXXVIII, XXXIX
III - San Francisco is 5-2 in Super Bowls. A 49ers win would be their first since 1994 and their sixth in franchise history, which would tie the Patriots and Steelers for most overall. Pittsburgh has lost two Super Bowls and New England five.
IV - The Chiefs are the third team in NFL history to appear in four Super Bowls within a five-season span, joining the 2014-2018 Patriots and the 1990-1993 Buffalo Bills.
V - The 49ers are the fifth franchise to have eight or more Super Bowl appearances:
New England Patriots 11
San Francisco 49ers 8 (including Sunday)
Dallas Cowboys 8
Pittsburgh Steelers 8
Denver Broncos 8
VI - Reid and Kyle Shanahan will be the fourth pair of head coaches to face each other in multiple Super Bowls. The coach who won the first game is 3-0 in the rematches.
Super Bowl Head Coach Rematches
Winner/Loser/Super Bowls
Chuck Noll/Tom Landry/X, XIII
Jimmy Johnson/Marv Levy/XXVII, XXVIII
Tom Coughlin/Bill Belichick/XLII, XLVI
Andy Reid/Kyle Shanahan/LIV, LVIII
VII - Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes will be 28 years, 147 days old on Sunday and will become the first quarterback in NFL history to start four Super Bowls prior to turning 30. He will easily break the record set by Tom Brady, who started his fourth Super Bowl at 30 years and 184 days old.
The only quarterbacks with more Super Bowl starts than Mahomes are Brady (10) and Hall of Famer John Elway (5). Mahomes will become the sixth quarterback with exactly four starts, joining Hall of Hamers Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, Roger Staubach, Terry Bradshaw and Jim Kelly.
Mahomes can become the fifth quarterback to win at least three Super Bowls. The others are Brady (7), Montana (4), Terry Bradshaw (4) and Hall of Famer Troy Aikman (3). Mahomes can tie Brady and Aikman for the most Super Bowl victories by a starting quarterback prior to age 30.
Mahomes can become the sixth quarterback to win multiple Super Bowls against a single opponent. He would join Bradshaw (vs. Dallas), Montana (vs. Cincinnati), Aikman (vs. Buffalo), Eli Manning (vs. New England) and Brady (vs. the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams). Mahomes is 3-0 vs the 49ers in his career, including his victory in Super Bowl.
VIII - Mahomes' record as a starter in the playoffs is 14-3. Before he became the starter, the Chiefs all-time playoff record was 9-18.
Mahomes' 14 postseason victories lead active quarterbacks and are tied for third in NFL history with Peyton Manning, Elway and Bradshaw. If the Chiefs win Sunday, Mahomes would join Brady (35) and Joe Montana (16) as the only quarterbacks with 15 or more playoff wins in their careers.
IX - Mahomes has played a full season of playoff games. In 17 postseason starts, he has completed 67.4% of his passes (422 of 626) for 4,802 passing yards, 39 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. That's a 106.3 quarterback rating.
Mahomes has won each of his last six playoff games while throwing 11 touchdown passes and no interceptions. He is the only quarterback since at least 1950 with six consecutive playoff starts with zero interceptions.
X - San Francisco's Brock Purdy will be 24 years and 46 days old on Sunday and will become the third-youngest quarterback to start a Super Bowl. Hall of Famer Dan Marino was 23 years, 127 days when he started for Miami in Super Bowl XIX (a loss to San Francisco), and Ben Roethlisberger was 23 years, 340 days old when he helped Pittsburgh beat Seattle in Super Bowl XL.
Purdy will be the ninth quarterback to start a Super Bowl prior to turning 25. The group includes Mahomes, as well as Miami's Marino and David Woodley, New England's Drew Bledsoe and Brady, Roethlisberger, the Rams' Jared Goff and Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts.
The only quarterbacks under age 25 to win a Super Bowl are Brady, Roethlisberger and Mahomes. Five quarterbacks - Marino, Woodley, Bledsoe, Goff and Hurts - lost a Super Bowl before their 25th birthday. None has returned to win one.
Although he's not yet 25, Purdy cannot assume he will again reach this plateau. The last 18 quarterbacks to lose their Super Bowl debut have not made it back to the game. And that doesn't include Marino, who played in the Super Bowl in his second season and never returned. Of the 34 previous quarterbacks who lost their Super Bowl debut, only Len Dawson, Craig Morton, Fran Tarkenton, Bob Griese, Elway and Kelly made it back.

XI - Purdy was the 262nd and last selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. He can become the lowest-drafted starting quarterback to win a Super Bowl, supplanting Brad Johnson, the 227th overall choice in the 1992 draft, who led Tampa Bay to victory against Oakland in Super Bowl XXXVII.
Purdy can join Johnson and Hall of Famers Bart Starr, Johnny Unitas, Kurt Warner and Staubach as the only quarterbacks drafted in the seventh round or later – including those who were undrafted – to win a Super Bowl.
XII - Purdy will be the third "Mr. Irrelevant" to play in the Super Bowl, joining New England linebacker Marty Moore in Super Bowl XXXI and Tampa Bay kicker Ryan Succop in Super Bowl LV. Succop was the only winner, beating…Kansas City.
How irrelevant is it to be "Mr. Irrelevant?" Purdy is 8-2 (.800) in his career vs. quarterbacks drafted in the first round, including playoffs, the best career record vs. first-round picks in the Super Bowl era (minimum 10 starts).
XIII - The Giants are 4-1 in Super Bowls. Their .800 winning percentage ties them with the Green Bay Packers for the highest among the 18 franchises that have played in at least three Super Bowls. The Giants are one of six franchises to win at least four Super Bowls. Their four Super Bowl victories are tied for the NFL's fourth-highest total. New England and Pittsburgh have won six Super Bowls, Dallas and San Francisco have won five – a total that can increase Sunday - and the Giants are tied with Green Bay at four. In their five Super Bowls, the Giants scored 104 points and allowed 104 points.
XIV - Reid, who is 2-2 in Super Bowls (2-1 with the Chiefs and 0-1 with Philadelphia) will join Bill Belichick (9), Don Shula (6) and Tom Landry (5) as the only head coaches in NFL history to reach five Super Bowls.
With the Chiefs' victory against Baltimore in the AFC Championship Game, Reid (25) joined Belichick (31) as the only coaches in NFL history to win 25+ playoff games.
XV - Reid and Mahomes can become the seventh head coach-starting quarterback duo to win back-to-back Super Bowls:
Team/Coach/Quarterback/Seasons
Green Bay/Vince Lombardi/Bart Starr/1966-67
Miami/Don Shula/Bob Griese/1972-73
Pittsburgh/Chuck Noll/Terry Bradshaw/1974-75 & 1978-79
Dallas/Jimmy Johnson/Troy Aikman/1992-93
Denver/Mike Shanahan/John Elway/1997-98
New England/Bill Belichick/Tom Brady/2003-04
With a victory on Sunday, Reid and Mahomes will become the fourth head coach-quarterback duo to win three or more Super Bowls together, joining Belichick and Brady (6), Noll and Bradshaw (4), and Bill Walsh and Joe Montana (3).
XVI - The 49ers's victory against Detroit in the NFC Championship Game was their 38th in the postseason. That broke a tie with Green Bay and New England for the most playoff wins in NFL history.
XVII – The team leading at halftime of the Super Bowl is 41-12. There have been four ties. The Giants trailed at the half in each of their five Super Bowls, twice by a 10-9 score (XXI vs. Denver and XLVI against New England). Their highest first-half point total in a Super Bowl was 10 against Buffalo in Super Bowl XXV (they trailed, 12-10).
XVIII - The Chiefs have won the last three and five of their previous six games against the 49ers, a streak that began in 2006 and includes Super Bowl XLIV. The teams last met on Oct. 23, 2022, a 44-23 Kansas City victory in San Francisco. Mahomes threw for 423 yards and three touchdowns. Purdy relieved Jimmy Garoppolo and threw his first nine NFL passes. The regular-season series is tied, 7-7.
XIX - How valuable has running back Christian McCaffrey been to the 49ers? This season, McCaffrey led the league in yards from scrimmage (2,023), became the first 49er to lead the NFL in rushing (1,459 yards) since Joe Perry in 1954, and scored the second-most touchdowns (21) in franchise history. San Francisco was 13-12 in the 25 games before McCaffrey arrived in a trade with Carolina on Oct. 21, 2022. His first game with San Francisco was the loss to the Chiefs in the teams' most recent regular-season meeting. Since then, the Niners are 22-2 in games McCaffrey has started and finished.
XX - The team scoring first in the Super Bowl in 37-20. But…in the Chiefs' three Super Bowls under Reid, they lost to Tampa Bay after scoring first, but defeated San Francisco and Philadelphia after their opponents were the first to score.
XXI - This game will have a familiar look. The Chiefs are the home team and will be wearing red jerseys, while the 49ers will be in white, just as the teams did for their Super Bowl matchup four years ago in Miami. Even the referee is the same – Bill Vinovich. He will become the first referee in NFL history to call the same matchup twice in a Super Bowl. Vinovich, 63, will work his third Super Bowl; he was the referee for the Patriots-Seahawks game nine years ago.
Teams wearing white jerseys have won 16 of the last 19 Super Bowls, including the Chiefs last year.
XXII - The Chiefs have five starters and the 49ers seven starters from Super Bowl LIV still on their roster.
Kansas City: QB Patrick Mahomes, TE Travis Kelce, WR Mecole Hardman, C Austin Reiter and DT Chris Jones.
San Francisco: WR Deebo Samuel, TE George Kittle, FB Kyle Juszczyk, DE Nick Bosa, DT Arik Armstead, LB Fred Warner and LB Dre Greenlaw.
Cornerback Charvarius Ward, who started for the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV, will start for the 49ers on Sunday.
XXIII - Teams with the most total yards in the Super Bowl are 42-15. The Chiefs won last year despite gaining 77 fewer yards than the Philadelphia Eagles.
XXIV - Tight end Travis Kelce led the Chiefs with 11 receptions, including one for a touchdown, and 116 yards in their AFC Championship Game victory in Baltimore. It was Kelce's sixth career playoff game with 10+ receptions; no other player has more than three such games. Kelce had 100+ receiving yards in a postseason game for the eighth time, tying Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice for the most in league history. Kelce (156) passed Rice (151) for the most playoff receptions by a player in NFL history. Kelce set the record in 21 games; eight games fewer than Rice played to set the previous mark.
Mahomes and Kelce have connected on 17 touchdowns in the playoffs, the highest total ever for a quarterback/receiver tandem.
XXV – Kansas City defeated the AFC's No. 1 seed, Baltimore, in the conference championship game and will face the NFC's top seed in the Super Bowl. Since the NFL first seeded playoff teams in 1975, 18 teams played the top seeds in each conference, and 10 won both games.
The Chiefs can become the sixth consecutive team since 2004 to face both No. 1 seeds in a playoff season and win both games. The Giants did it twice:
2004 New England
2005 Pittsburgh
2007 Giants
2011 Giants
2020 Tampa Bay
XXVI - Eli Manning (2-0) is one of six quarterbacks to start more than one Super Bowl without a defeat. The others are Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana (both 4-0), Aikman (3-0), Jim Plunkett and Bart Starr (both 2-0).
XXVII - Purdy can become the second quarterback to win the Super Bowl wearing No. 13, joining the Rams' Kurt Warner in Super Bowl XXXIV. The only other Super Bowl quarterback to wear No. 13 was Marino 39 years ago. Mahomes is one of three quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl wearing No. 15. The others were Green Bay's Bart Starr (I and II) and the Giants' Jeff Hostetler (XXV).
XXVIII - The team with fewer turnovers in the Super Bowl is 39-6. Super Bowl opponents have had the same number of turnovers 12 times. San Francisco has a plus-9 turnover differential in seven Super Bowls, Kansas City is plus-3 in five games. Despite their 4-1 record, the Giants' Super Bowl turnover differential is minus-3.
XXIX - Reid will be 65 years and 329 days old on Sunday and can replace the Giants' Tom Coughlin as the third-oldest head coach to win a Super Bowl. Coughlin was 65 years, 158 days when the Giants won Super Bowl XLVI. Tampa Bay's Bruce Arians was 68 years, 127 days old when the Buccaneers beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl LV, and Belichick was 66 years, 293 days old when he won his sixth title with the Patriots in Super Bowl LIII.
XXX - Of the 57 Super Bowl MVP awards (including co-winners in Super Bowl XII), 31 have been won by quarterbacks, including two by Eli Manning and one by Phil Simms. The other Giants MVP was Ottis Anderson in Super Bowl XXV.
Seven running backs were named MVP in the first 32 Super Bowls, including Anderson. Not a single running back has won the award in the last 25 Super Bowls.
Dallas linebacker Chuck Howley, the MVP of Super Bowl V, was the only player on a losing team to win the award.
Defensive end Harvey Martin and defensive tackle Randy White of Dallas shared the MVP award in Super Bowl XII.
Only 10 defensive players have been named Super Bowl MVP
Quarterback: 31 Defensive End: 2
Wide Receiver: 8 Cornerback: 1
Running Back: 7 Defensive Tackle: 1
Linebacker: 4 Kickoff/Punt Returner: 1
Safety: 2
XXXI - Linebacker/long snapper Steve DeOssie (Super Bowl XXV) and long snapper Zak DeOssie (XLII and XLVI) both won Super Bowls with the Giants, the only father/son duo to win the game with the same team. However, the McCaffreys can join them on Sunday. Wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, who played his first three NFL seasons (1991-93) for the Giants, was with the 49ers when they won Super Bowl XXIX and the Broncos when they won Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII. His son Christian can add a fourth ring to the family collection.
XXXII - Twelve teams have never won the Super Bowl. Eight have played in the Super Bowl but lost: the Minnesota Vikings (four times), Buffalo Bills (four), Cincinnati Bengals (three), Carolina Panthers (two), Atlanta Falcons (two), Los Angeles Chargers (one), Tennessee Titans (one) and Arizona Cardinals (one).
Four teams have never appeared in the Super Bowl: the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars.
XXXIII - The team with the most passing yards in the Super Bowl is 30-27.
XXXIV - Only 28 people in NFL history have won a Super Bowl as a player and coach, including three with Giants connections. Linebacker Pepper Johnson was on the Giants' winning teams in Super Bowls XXI and XXV and won three rings as an assistant coach with New England, Sam Madison was a Giants cornerback in Super Bowl XLII and on the Chiefs' coaching staff four years ago, and Larry Izzo was a three-time winner as a Patriots player and was the Giants' assistant special teams coach in Super Bowl XLVI.
XXXV – Coughlin, who led the Giants to victories in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI, is one of eight coaches to win multiple Super Bowls without a loss.
XXXVI - The designated home team is 24-33 in Super Bowls and has lost 13 of the last 17, including the Eagles last year in Super Bowl LVII vs. the Chiefs in Arizona. The AFC and NFC alternate home designation each year. Kansas City is the home team Sunday.
XXXVII - Thirty-seven years ago, Giants quarterback Phil Simms set a Super Bowl record that still stands when he completed 88% of his passes (22 of 25) in a 39-20 rout of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI.
XXXVIII - The Chiefs' victory last season brought the AFC to within one game of the NFC in Super Bowls, 29-28.
XXXIX - Eleven players selected NFL MVP played for Super Bowl winners in the same season: Bart Starr in 1966, Terry Bradshaw in 1978, Mark Moseley in 1982, Lawrence Taylor in 1986, Joe Montana in 1989, Emmitt Smith in 1993, Steve Young in 1994, Brett Favre in 1996, Terrell Davis in 1998, Warner in 1999, and Mahomes last year. Starr, Bradshaw, Montana, Smith, Young, Warner and Mahomes were also named Super Bowl MVP. Before Mahomes won last year, nine consecutive MVPs who advanced to the Super Bowl lost the game.
If Mahomes wins his third Super Bowl MVP Award on Sunday, he will tie Montana for the second most all-time. Brady was named MVP a record five times.
Mahomes can become the third quarterback to win back-to-back Super Bowl MVPs, joining Bart Starr (Super Bowls I and II) and Terry Bradshaw (XIII and XIV).
XL – The team with the most rushing yards is 42-14 in the Super Bowl. New England and Atlanta each ran for 104 yards in Super Bowl LI.
XLI - Eight former Giants assistant coaches have led teams to Super Bowls as head coaches. Six of the eight have won at least one Super Bowl. Former Giants assistant coaches are 15-10 as head coaches in Super Bowls.
Name Giants Assistant Team, Super Bowl(s)
Bill Belichick 1979-90 New England: XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLII, XLVI, XLIX, LI, LII, LIII (6-3)
Tom Coughlin 1988-90 Giants: XLII, XLVI (2-0)
Jim Fassel 1991-92 Giants: XXXV (0-1)
John Fox 1997-2001 Carolina: XXXVIII; Denver: XLVIII (0-2)
Tom Landry 1954-59 Dallas: V, VI, X, XII, XIII (2-3)
Vince Lombardi 1954-58 Green Bay: I, II (2-0)
Bill Parcells 1979, 1981-82 Giants: XXI, XXV; Patriots: XXXI (2-1)
Sean Payton 1999-2002 New Orleans: XLIV (1-0)
XLII - In the 57 Super Bowl coin tosses, tails lead heads, 30-27. The coin came up heads last year. Each of the last 13 coin-toss winners has deferred to the second half, including the Chiefs last year. Prior to Kansas City winning last year, the coin toss winner had lost eight consecutive Super Bowls.
XLIII - The NFC East is the only division in which all four teams have at least one Super Bowl victory. The Giants' division has four more Super Bowl triumphs than any other. A Chiefs victory on Sunday would put the AFC West alone in second place.
NFC East: 13 AFC West: 9
AFC East: 9 NFC North: 5
AFC North: 8 NFC South: 3
NFC West: 8 AFC South: 2
XLIV - Kickoff returns in the first 57 Super Bowls: 448. Kickoff return touchdowns: 10. Punt returns in the first 57 Super Bowls: 249. Punt return touchdowns: 0. That latter streak almost ended last year, when Kansas City's Kadarius Toney was tackled at the Eagles' 5-yard line after a Super Bowl-record 65-yard return.
XLV - McCaffrey has scored in all five of his playoff games with the 49ers, the longest streak in franchise history. With at least one touchdown and 50 scrimmage yards in each of his first six career playoff games, he can join Marcus Allen (Raiders) and Terrell Davis (Broncos) in doing so in an NFL-record seventh straight game in the Super Bowl.
XLVI – When Kelce scored on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes on the Chiefs opening series in the AFC Championship Game, it was the eighth consecutive postseason game in which Kansas City scored on its first possession. That is the longest such streak by any team since opening drives were first tracked in 1993. No other team has such a streak longer than four games.
XLVII - Defensive end Justin Tuck, who is in the Giants' Ring of Honor, sacked Brady twice in both Super Bowls XLII and XLVI. Tuck and Von Miller are the only players in NFL history with multiple sacks in multiple Super Bowls. Tuck's 4.0 sacks in two Super Bowls are the third-highest total in the game's history. Pro Football Hall of Famer Charles Haley had 4.5 sacks in five games, and Miller has 4.5 in two games for the Broncos and Rams. Individual sacks did not become an official statistic until 1982 (Super Bowl XVII).
XLVIII - In the 52 Super Bowls in which they were not one of the competing teams, the Giants played the eventual champion 37 times in the regular season. They are 2-35 in those games, defeating the then 13-0 Denver Broncos in 1998 and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008. The Giants are 6-28 against Super Bowl losers. The Giants lost to the 49ers in Week 3 this season.
XLIX - The team with the higher time of possession in the Super Bowl is 43-14.
50 - Only three teams have won a Super Bowl the year after losing it – the 1971 Cowboys, 1972 Dolphins and the 2018 Patriots.
LI - Las Vegas is the 16th metropolitan area to host a Super Bowl. Miami has hosted a record 11 Super Bowls. New Orleans will host its 11th next year.
LII - There has never been a shutout in a Super Bowl; the 1971 Dolphins (VI) and the 2018 Rams (LIII) are tied for fewest points (3) scored.
LIII - The Giants' victory against Buffalo in XXV and the Rams' victory against Tennessee in XXXIV are the only Super Bowls in which neither team committed a turnover.
LIV - The Chiefs' 17 points in the 2023 AFC Championship are the fewest by a team in their win to advance to the Super Bowl since 2003, when the Carolina Panthers defeated the Eagles in Philadelphia in the NFC Championship Game, 14-3.
LV – Purdy is the eighth starting quarterback to reach a Super Bowl in his first two seasons and hopes to join Warner, Brady, Roethlisberger and Russell Wilson as the only quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl within their first two seasons.
LVI – Kyle Shanahan's .727 postseason winning percentage is the second highest all time among coaches with at least 10 playoff games.
Coach Record Percentage
Vince Lombardi 9-1 .900
Kyle Shanahan 8-3 .727
Bill Walsh 10-4 .714
Joe Gibbs 17-7 .708
Bill Belichick 31-13 .705
LVII - Kansas City defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo can become the first four-time Super Bowl-winning coordinator on either side of the ball. Spagnuolo devised the defensive game plan that limited the Patriots' offense to 14 points in the Giants' epic victory in Super Bowl XLII, and he has won two more Super Bowls in his five seasons with the Chiefs to become the only offensive or defensive coordinator to win Super Bowls in that role with multiple franchises.
The other three-time winning coordinators are Washington defensive coordinators Richie Petitbon (Super Bowls XVII, XXII and XXVI) and three former New England Patriots coaches: offensive coordinators Charlies Weis (XXXVI, XXXVIII, and XXXIX) and Josh McDaniel (XLIX, LI, and LIII), and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel (XLII, LIV, ad LVII). Crennel (XXI and XXV) and Weis (XXV) also won Super Bowl rings as Giants assistant coaches.
LVIII – Kansas City running back Isiah Pacheco has rushed for 50+ yards and one touchdown in four consecutive playoff games. Since 1970, three Hall of Famers are the only players with longer streaks: John Riggins (7), Terrell Davis (7) and Franco Harris (two different 5-game streaks).
