! Young Giants fans become a part of the team!
April 5, 2006, Giants Practice Bubble - Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ) teamed up with the Giants on April 5th to host a SHAPE IT UP football clinic for 150 boys and girls in the Giants practice bubble at Giants Stadium. All of the children who attended were Junior Giants Fan Club members and were specially invited to the clinic!
Horizon BCBSNJ's program – SHAPE IT UP – focuses on being a "fit kid" and the importance of eating healthy and being active. Junior Giants learned that being a "fit kid" is a way of saying that people should get a lot of physical activity, eat well and have a healthy weight. If you are fit, your body works well, feels good and can do all the things you want to do. And by the looks of the young athletes in action, these kids are certainly fit!
The program was hosted by three Giants players – former Giants running back Joe Morris, former Giants fullback Charles Way and current Giants WR/KR Willie Ponder. The players led the children through five skill stations, which included passing, kicking and blocking drills. The featured station – the Food Group Football Toss – challenged the kids to throw footballs at targets named for the five food groups. Before competing in the football toss, Charles Way chatted with each group of children about what each of the groups is and its importance in a balanced diet. The children felt like all-stars as members of their favorite team led them in an afternoon full of football and fun.
"The Horizon BCBSNJ/Giants Youth Clinic was designed to inspire children to practice healthy lifestyles by infusing fun into the learning process," said Larry Altman, Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Communications for Horizon BCBSNJ. "Horizon BCBSNJ is finding innovative ways to reach our children and promote healthier living. Under the guidance of their role models, this program helps reinforce the healthy habits and positive attitude that are fundamental to our children's success and development."
Each member of the Junior Giants Fan Club receives an invitation to an event during the year where they can get "inside access" to the Giants. This Junior Giants SHAPE IT UP event was the first event this year and there will be more to come!
