Good offense usually beats good defense, and that was what happened on the play of the day. Blanketed by second-year cornerback Eli Apple inside the red zone, wide receiver Brandon Marshall out-jumped him to pull in a touchdown from Eli Manning in the corner of the end zone. Marshall, a six-time Pro Bowler, has three inches on Apple, who is no small cornerback at 6-foot-1 and 199 pounds.

SAFETY DARIAN THOMPSON

Safeties coach David Merritt has to like what he is seeing from his top tandem, Landon Collins and Darian Thompson. Today, Thompson grabbed an interception that was forced by a blitzing Collins. Manning lobbed a pass over the All-Pro, and Thompson laid out to make the play. Thompson, whose promising rookie season was cut short because of injuries, is back running with the first team in camp.

"We don't make any mistakes," Collins said the other day. "That's the biggest thing. We complement each other in that area. If I'm calling something wrong, he always fixes me. Everybody looks at me like I'm that guy back there, but he's my right-hand man. So it's like, if I mess up, he's got me. If he messes up, I got him."

SAFETY NAT BERHE

For the second time in training camp, safety Nat Berhe came up with an interception off a tipped pass. This time, he got one off backup quarterback Josh Johnson during team drills. Berhe also got him on a similar play on Sunday. Like Thompson, Berhe, who has played in just seven games with two starts over the previous two seasons, is competing to start opposite Collins.

Honorable mention: Wide receiver Darius Powe, who had a big practice yesterday, started out with an early catch at Thursday's padded practice…Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul and defensive back Mykkele Thompson each broke up a pass at the line of scrimmage…Collins made a nice play to swat a pass out of the hands of tight end Rhett Ellison…Middle linebacker B.J. Goodson and cornerback DaShaun Amos each had a pass defensed in coverage…Defensive back Trey Robinson had an interception off rookie quarterback Davis Webb during the seven-on-seven "opportunity" period, which is designed to give young players a chance to show what they've got.
