24 Questions in 24 Days: Day 3 sleeper pick

TYRONE-TRACY-24-QUESTIONS

Giants.com is counting down to the start of 2024 Giants Training Camp with 24 questions in 24 days.

4) Which Day 3 pick could grow into an impact player in the long run?

Matt Citak: I have been quite high on the Giants' six-person draft class ever since the conclusion of the 2024 NFL Draft. The class features several players that have the capability of being impact players right out of the gate for the Giants. A few others, with a little development, could turn into key contributors. My first thought here was Theo Johnson, the team's fourth-round pick, but with the rookie tight end landing on the physically unable to perform list last week, I'm going with fifth-round pick Tyrone Tracy Jr.

Tracy, at 5-foot-11 and 209 pounds, saw his first extensive action as a running back this past year at Purdue when he rushed for 716 yards and eight touchdowns on 113 carries (6.3 avg.) while adding 19 receptions for 132 yards. He also returned 16 kickoffs for 408 yards (25.5. avg.) and a touchdown. This led to him being named second-team All-Big Ten (AP), third-team All-Big Ten - Return Specialist (Coaches), and Honorable Mention (Media), along with All-Big Ten Honorable Mention – Running Back (Coaches, Media).

"He was our best pass protector in the backfield, so he definitely was tough enough there," Purdue head coach Ryan Walters said on a recent episode of the Giants Huddle podcast. "He had a few runs in spring ball and a few runs in fall camp where he lowered his shoulder and invited and embraced and sought out contact. That's when I was like, man, in my opinion, we got an NFL guy. We'll see how the season plays out, but I've been in this profession at this level for 15, 16 years now, and Tyrone is an NFL back. So I wasn't surprised when things played out the way they did and where he's at now, that was not a surprise to me."

Devin Singletary will likely receive a bulk of the carries out of the backfield this year, but Tracy could earn a role pretty quickly as the team's third-down back. He needs more experience playing running back, but if he shows a growth like he did last year at Purdue, Tracy could eventually play a big role in the offense. Additionally, the rookie should also compete in training camp to be the team's kick returner, something he did well while with the Boilermakers. Whether it's on offense or special teams, Tracy could carve out a solid role for himself early in his rookie year with a strong showing this summer. If he's able to do that as a rookie, then the sky is the limit for Tracy in the long run.
