It was not too long ago that Joe Schoen stood on stage at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center to be introduced as general manager of the New York Giants.
Now less than a year later, the Giants have returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2016, an impressive feat in the first year under Schoen and coach Brian Daboll.
While time has flown by since that introductory press conference, a lot of events have occurred that led the Giants to this point. Some of them were difficult, while a lot of them were good, but all of them played some role in this successful first year under the franchise's new leadership. And it's not over yet.
Let's take a look at the timeline of events that led the Giants to the postseason.

January 21 – Giants announced that they have officially hired Joe Schoen to be just the franchise's fifth general manager since 1979 when Pro Football Hall of Famer George Young was hired.
"We are pleased and proud to name Joe as our general manager," Giants president John Mara said. "Throughout our search, Joe impressed us with his ability to communicate a progressive and comprehensive vision for our team. His philosophy and collaborative approach to building a roster and coaching staff align with what we were looking for in a general manager."
January 26 – Schoen was officially introduced as general manager of the New York Giants.
"I don't take this job lightly," Schoen said. "I fully understand the responsibility that comes with being the general manager of the New York Football Giants. I would tell you this, throughout the interview process it became very clear early on John's and Steve's passion for bringing a winning football program to the tri-state area. I was assured that I would be given every resource I needed in order to do that, and I promise you that I will do everything in my power to build a team that will make you proud on the field and off the field. We will look at every avenue to upgrade the roster, add depth, competition and bring the right type of people into the organization. We are currently in the process of hiring our head coach search. The relationship between myself and the next head coach will be integral. We will be aligned in our plan and vision in how to build the organization and the franchise and build a winning team. We will build a strong foundation, which will allow us to sustain success over time."
January 28 - Giants announced that Brian Daboll has been hired as the 20th head coach in franchise history.
"Over the last four years, I have observed first-hand Brian's strengths as a leader – he is an excellent communicator, intelligent, innovative, and hard working," said Schoen. "Brian's genuine and engaging personality is refreshing. He fosters relationships with the players and coaches around him. He is progressive in his vision and values collaboration, two of the attributes we think are essential. I am thrilled to partner with Brian and welcome he and his family to this side of the state."
January 31 – Brian Daboll was officially introduced as the new Head Coach of the New York Giants.
"I had a great visit here a week or 10 days ago and just very thankful and honored to be standing up here in this position," said Daboll. "I thank the organizations that I've been a part of, from ownership to management to coaches to support staff to players. I wouldn't be here without them. And then to my family, my wife Beth and my six kids and the whole crew right there, I love you guys. I look forward to this next journey. Got a lot of work to do, that's for sure, but I think that this is a very enticing job to be able to work with Joe and try to create and build something that's very special and long-lasting. I'm not going to make any promises or predictions, but, again, just very grateful and look forward to working."
February 6 – Giants signed Scottish punter Jamie Gillan to a Reserve/Future deal.
February 11 – Giants officially announced Mike Kafka as offensive coordinator, Wink Martindale as defensive coordinator and Thomas McGaughey as special teams coordinator
"What we were looking for was intelligence, good communicators, good teachers that understood and were experts in their respective areas, and good teammates," Daboll said.
February 14 – Giants announced returning assistant coaches along with new coaching hires.
March 1 – Schoen and Brian Daboll met with reporters from the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, where the GM told the media that his philosophy is to "be competitive today and also build for tomorrow."

March 15 – Giants signed offensive lineman Jon Feliciano.
March 16 – The 2022 league year and free agency officially began at 4:00pm EST. Giants signed guard Mark Glowinski and quarterback Tyrod Taylor.
March 20 – Giants signed running back Matt Breida, long snapper Casey Kreiter and outside linebacker Jihad Ward.
March 25 – Giants signed wide receiver Richie James.
April 4 – Giants opened up their voluntary offseason workout program, the first time Daboll could meet with the team in a formal setting.
"This is the first day where we're all back in the building and can get to know one another," Daboll said. "There's a lot of things that we have to install in terms of schematics. But we also have to talk about expectations and standards and get to know one another. There's a little over five months until we end up playing and a few months before training camp starts. So, this is really just the foundational piece to a long year ahead. We just try to get better each day and do the things that we need to do. Can't look too far down the road on this thing, it'll get you pretty quick."
April 19 – Giants began their three-day voluntary minicamp.
"I think that's part of leadership, building something that the guys can be proud of, take ownership, then finding ways to unite them as their head coach, as a position coach, finding different ways to inspire 'em," Daboll said about establishing a new culture. "Again, we're a long way away. Right now, all I ask them to do is focus on today, what can we do to get better from yesterday, not make more out of it than it is because we have a long way to go.
"Keep building that chemistry together, go out together to dinner, go see a basketball game, go to a hockey game. I think that's important. Off-field relationships. They don't have to be best of friends, but it helps because you have each other's back when you do. When things are tough -- they'll get tough, they always do in this league -- you can lean on the guy next to you when you are having a tough time. You know that guy has got your back. That's important."
April 28 – Giants announced they picked up the fifth-year option on defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence.

That night, the 2022 NFL Draft began. The Giants selected outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux with the No. 5 overall pick.
Just a few minutes later, the Giants selected offensive tackle Evan Neal with the No. 7 overall selection.
"We're ecstatic with the two players we got, obviously getting Kayvon Thibodeaux, a really good pass rusher at five, we are excited about that," Schoen said the first night of the draft. "Thought of getting him there with Azeez on the other side and the pass rush is important to us, so two young pass rushers on the team now that we are definitely excited about. Evan Neal, again, I'm sure it will come up, but starting off we'll be putting him at right tackle. Obviously, we really like his versatility, 40 career starts in three different spots in the SEC, only missed one game in his career with COVID. So both 21 years old, young players, both still have upside to develop. But, you know, it worked out great. We are happy with both of the players that we were able to procure tonight."
April 29-30 - The Giants went on to complete their 2022 draft class with the selection of nine more players, in addition to Thibodeaux and Neal. The team's entire draft class included:
- Round 1, Pick No. 5 - Kayvon Thibodeaux, EDGE, Oregon
- Round 1, Pick No. 7 - Evan Neal, OT, Alabama
- Round 2, Pick No. 43 - Wan'Dale Robinson, WR, Kentucky
- Round 3, Pick No. 67 - Joshua Ezeudu, OL, North Carolina
- Round 3, Pick No. 81 - Cor'Dale Flott, CB, LSU
- Round 4, Pick No. 112 - Daniel Bellinger, TE, San Diego State
- Round 4, Pick No. 114 - Dane Belton, S, Iowa
- Round 5, Pick No. 146 - Micah McFadden, LB, Indiana
- Round 5, Pick No. 147 - D.J. Davidson, DT, Arizona State
- Round 5, Pick No. 173 - Marcus McKethan, OL, North Carolina
- Round 6, Pick No. 182 - Darrian Beavers, LB, Cincinnati
May 13-14 – Giants held their rookie minicamp at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center.
"It's for you to get to know us, us to get to know you," Daboll said about the priority of the minicamp. "There's only a couple days we'll do stuff on the field. There's a long way to go, as they can see. We're not going to overdo it in terms of the installation and give them a ton of things to learn. I think it's really important, particularly the trial guys, to minimize the package, not motion and shift and do all these crazy things, and just see who can perform out there. And maybe we find a couple guys in terms of the tryout guys. Look, these guys have probably not been doing a whole lot of true football work, so we'll ease them into things."

May 14 – Giants signed undrafted free agent defensive lineman Ryder Anderson following the rookie minicamp.
May 16 – First day of the organized team activities (OTAs)
June 3 – OTA Offseason Workout program officially ended.
June 7-9 – Mandatory Minicamp from East Rutherford, N.J.
"We've been at it for a long time with the extra camp. We've had two. Guys have had great attendance," Daboll said on June 7. "Feel very good about where we are at in terms of the spring and what we've got accomplished. Thrown a lot at them. The guys have come in every day with really blinders on ready to work and get better and taking it day by day. Great appreciation for the work ethic that those guys have put in and the coaches. Long way to go, but we've got a lot accomplished this spring."

July 26 – Veterans reported to training camp.
July 27 – Training camp officially began.
"We talked about this during the draft, and we talk about it now. We're looking for smart, tough, dependable people in our organization," Daboll told the media. "People that make good decisions on and off the field in terms of intelligence. Doing what they're supposed to do when they're supposed to do it all the time. And then have some mental toughness, some resiliency about them. Those are three qualities that we covet when we're looking, whether that's draft pick, free agents, coaching staff, players. That's the identify of what we're trying to build...
"I learned a long time ago, you have to take care of today. Being in the league for 20 plus years, there's teams that people thought that were going to go all the way and didn't make the playoffs. And there's teams that people thought they weren't going to. And what we try to focus on is getting better each day, like Joe said. Focusing on the things that we can do and we control, which is going out there, having good meetings, having a good practice, trying to string good days together. And that's really where our focus is going to be."
August 11 - In the very first sideline appearance for Brian Daboll as head coach of the Giants, the team traveled to New England for their first preseason game against the Patriots at Gillette Stadium. The Giants rushed for 177 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries (5.4 avg.) as they defeated the Patriots, 23-21.
August 16 – Giants reduced roster down to 85 players following the first preseason game.
August 21 - In their second preseason game, the Giants welcomed the Cincinnati Bengals to MetLife Stadium. Daniel Jones completed 14 of 16 passes for 116 yards and hit on each of his final eight throws on the Giants' first touchdown drive, which helped lead the team to a 25-22 victory.
However, the Giants suffered a tough injury in this outing as Kayvon Thibodeaux stayed on the ground and grabbed his right knee with 11:04 remaining in the second quarter. Thibodeaux's leg bent awkwardly when he was hit directly on the knee by Bengals tight end Thaddeus Moss. The rookie would go on to miss the final preseason game, along with the first two games of the regular season.
August 23 – Giants reduced roster down to 80 players following the second preseason matchup.
August 28 - The Giants wrapped up their preseason slate with an "away" game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. Many of the starters did not play in this contest, including Daniel Jones, which paved the way for Davis Webb to see extended action at quarterback. Webb completed 30 of 38 passes for 202 yards for a touchdown, which put the icing on the cake of a strong preseason for the veteran. In three preseason games, Webb threw 81 passes and completed 60 (74.1%) for 457 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. The Giants fell in the third preseason game, 31-27.
August 30 – Giants reduced roster down to 53 players following the preseason finale.
August 31 – Giants claimed cornerback Nick McCloud (Buffalo Bills) and safety Jason Pinnock (New York Jets) off waivers.
September 1 – Giants signed veteran safety Tony Jefferson to the practice squad.
September 5 – Giants signed veteran cornerback Fabian Moreau to the practice squad.
September 11 – Brian Daboll made his head coaching debut as the Giants opened up the season in Nashville against the Tennessee Titans. After Daniel Jones found Chris Myarick in the end zone to bring the Giants within one with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter, Daboll decided to go for two and the win rather than kick the extra point. Jones then found Saquon Barkley, who made a nice move to evade a defender and dove into the end zone to give the Giants the lead. Daboll's decision gave the Giants a 21-20 victory and laid the foundation for the entire season.
Barkley finished the game with 18 carries for 164 yards, good for an average of 9.1 yards per carry, and a touchdown while adding six receptions for an additional 30 yards and the two-point conversion. It was the running back's best performance since Week 16 of the 2019 season and served as a preview of the strong season the 25-year-old was about to have.
GIANTS RECORD: 1-0
"We're going to be aggressive," Daboll said about going for two. "That's what we want to do. That's the mindset I want the players to have. If it didn't work, I could (inaudible) with it. I thought that was the right decision. You're an inch away or whatever it was. I trust Saquon (Barkley). I grabbed a couple of defensive players and busted their tails out there. I went up to some of the offensive guys that weren't out there too and I said, 'Hey,' we got the ball, wherever it was. I said, 'If we score, I'm going for two, you guys good with that?' And they said, 'F-yeah.'"
September 18 – In the first home game of the season, Graham Gano kicked four field goals, including two from 50+ yards, while Daniel Bellinger took his first NFL reception 16 yards for a touchdown as the Giants defeated the Carolina Panthers, 19-16.

September 20 – Giants signed veteran linebacker Jaylon Smith to the practice squad.
September 26 – Wide receiver Sterling Shepard suffered a season-ending ACL injury as the Giants fell to the Dallas Cowboys, 28-20, on Monday Night Football.
"Any player that gets taken off on a cart is not a good sight," Saquon Barkley said after the game. "Obviously, the relationship I have with Shep, it definitely hurts a little bit more. But at the end of the day, I'm his brother and I'm going to be there for him. I've dealt with something like that, you never know until you go in there and get an MRI. Always have high prayers whoever it is, and he knows I got his back and we (the Giants) have his back. We appreciate everything he does and energy he brings to the team."
GIANTS RECORD: 2-1
October 2 – In the first Legacy Game honoring the Giants of the 1980s and '90s, the 2022 Giants rushed for a season-high 262 yards as they defeated the Chicago Bears, 20-12. Daniel Jones suffered a sprained ankle in this game and was replaced by backup Tyrod Taylor. After Taylor was then forced to leave with a concussion, Jones re-entered the game. Both he and Saquon Barkley went on to take some snaps at the quarterback position as the Giants grinded out the win.

GIANTS RECORD: 5-1
"It's a blessing," Thibodeaux said about contributing to the win. "It was the greatest moment. I really sat out there and cried just because the emotion I felt that now, I'm in the NFL. Now that you can really contribute and this is what they pay me to be here for, so the fact that I was able to get it done is a great feeling."
October 23 – Daniel Jones rushed for a career-high 107 yards and a touchdown to go with his 202 yards and additional score through the air en route to a 23-17 road victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.
GIANTS RECORD: 6-1

"We just thought it was for the best of the team and wish Kadarius well," Daboll said."
October 30 – Offensive lineman Nick Gates returned to the field for the first time since suffering a gruesome leg injury in Week 2 of the 2021 season. He played five snaps on offense as the Giants lost to the Seahawks in Seattle, 27-13.

"It's special, coming back from the injury, well-documented," Daboll said about Gates' return. "Just want to be part of the team and do what he can. He's a great young guy to work with…"
"It definitely feels good," Gates said. "Good fun to get back out there with the team and be out there with the guys. It sucks we lost, but it was a little moral victory for me."

"To see him go down like that is tough and feel for him," Jones said about the rookie. "We've had guys step up and play well throughout the year, so it won't be any different here. We all got his back and supporting him for sure."
GIANTS RECORD: 7-3
November 24 – The Giants faced off against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day. While the defense was able to intercept Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott twice, Dallas outgained the Giants 430-300 on their way to a 28-20 Cowboys win.
GIANTS RECORD: 7-4
December 4 – In what was the weirdest game of the season, the Giants sacked Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke five times but the two teams ended up finishing in a 20-20 tie.
GIANTS RECORD: 7-4-1
December 11 – The Giants suffered their worst loss of the season at the hands of division rival Philadelphia Eagles, 48-22, at MetLife Stadium. It marked their fourth consecutive game without a win, which included three losses and a tie, and brought their record on the season to 7-5-1.
"You just got to get ready. I told you before, when you're winning, it's fine. When you're losing, it's humbling," Daboll said after the loss. "You lose like this, you own it. You don't make any excuses. They played well. And we get to have an opportunity to get ready and play a big game on Sunday night."
GIANTS RECORD: 7-5-1
December 18 – The Giants went on the road to Washington and picked up their most crucial win of the season when they defeated the Commanders, 20-12, on Sunday Night Football. The win gave the team a significant boost in their chances to make the postseason. Kayvon Thibodeaux had the biggest game of his young career when he registered a career-high 12 tackles, three tackles for loss and a strip-sack of Taylor Heinicke that the rookie recovered and took one yard into the end zone for a touchdown.
GIANTS RECORD: 8-5-1
"I think he has consistently improved throughout the year," the head coach said about Thibdoeaux. "I've said this before, I'm glad we drafted him. I'm glad he is a part of the team. I think he has gotten better each week. He's a big part of our defense."
"We're gonna battle," the No. 5 pick said about the team following the big win. "I think our coaches are resilient and I think they call the game with fire, with passion, and players see that. It helps us build because we do it together. Every team, they speak about this 'we're family', but come on. Everybody knows that. Let's be real and see it. It exudes out of how we play. I think for us, we gotta continue to stick together, continue to keep our bodies healthy and keep moving."
December 24 – The Giants traveled to Minnesota to take on the Vikings on Christmas Eve. It was a back-and-forth game as the Giants scored a touchdown with 2:01 remaining in the fourth quarter and converted on the two-point attempt to tie the game. While it was a tough loss, the Giants proved they could compete with one of the NFC's top teams.

January 1 – The Giants began 2023 with a bang against the Indianapolis Colts. Daniel Jones put together perhaps the strongest overall performance of his career as he completed 19 of 24 passes (79.2 percent) for two touchdowns and zero interceptions for a passer rating of 125.2 and added 91 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The defense held the Colts to just three third-down conversions on 12 attempts, along with just 10 points, the lowest point total allowed by the Giants all season. The Giants scored a season-high 38 points themselves as the dominant performance earned the Giants their first trip to the postseason since 2016.
GIANTS RECORD: 9-6-1
"It was good excitement, obviously," Daboll said about the Gatorade bath he received after the playoff-clinching win. "You work hard in this business to try to give yourself a chance to play extra innings or more games. So, we have done that. We put ourselves in a position to compete more than just one other game. So, excitement, sure. Definitely."
"That was a special moment," Daniel Jones added. "A lot of guys who put in a lot of work. We've been through, certainly, some tougher times and it feels good to be on this side of it, for sure. Special moment with those guys. Really proud of this team, proud of what we did today. Grateful to be a part of it."
Xavier McKinney also made his return on New Year's Day, finishing second on the team with seven total tackles and added a pass breakup.
January 8 – The Giants closed out the regular season on the road against the Eagles. The team entered the matchup locked into the No. 6 seed in the playoffs, while Philadelphia needed a victory in order to clinch the NFC East title, No. 1 seed in the conference and first-round bye.
Most of the starters got the day off, but that did not prevent the Giants from keeping the Week 18 matchup competitive. Davis Webb made his first NFL start and threw for 168 yards and a touchdown with an additional score on the ground. Gary Brightwell rushed for a career-high 60 yards, Lawrence Cager finished with a career-best eight receptions for 69 yards, and Nick McCloud picked up the first 1.5 sacks of his career as the Giants' reserves fell to the Eagles' starters, 22-16.
GIANTS RECORD: 9-7-1
Later that day, the Giants' Super Wild Card Weekend matchup became official as the team found out they would be traveling back to Minnesota for a rematch against the Vikings.
Kickoff is set for 4:30 pm EST on Sunday, January 15.
"It's the same as Week 1 as it is Week 5 as it is the end of the year," Daboll said Monday about having experience in the playoffs. "Obviously, the stakes are a little different. If you lose a game, you go home. Again, every year is different. Every year that I've been privileged to be part of the playoffs has been different. A lot of different circumstances, different games, how many you played. And what I've learned is none of that really matters. What matters is how you go and play the game on Sunday. So, our preparation, our consistent way we do things, that's all going to be important to us in terms of the process. And then ultimately going out there and executing.
"Again, I've been part of a lot of them. But they're all different. The losses really hurt; they probably hurt more than the happiness of the wins in the playoffs. But in terms of my overall experience, I'd say there are a lot of coaches on our staff that have some, too. But I talked to those guys already. It's what we do this week. I think everybody understands that. It's what we do this week and ultimately how we go out there and play in the game, because what wins in Week 1 wins in the playoffs. And what loses in Week 1 loses in the playoffs."
