After almost 40 years as a football coach -- which included two Super Bowl victories -- offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride announced his retirement on Jan. 2. Twelve days later, the Giants hired Ben McAdoo, a former assistant under Mike McCarthy with the Green Bay Packers, as his replacement. The Giants also parted with longtime tight ends coach Mike Pope and running backs coach Jerald Ingram while reassigning Sean Ryan to wide receivers and Kevin M. Gilbride to tight ends. Former Oregon State offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf was hired to instruct the quarterbacks in addition to Craig Johnson taking over as the new running backs coach.
2. Giants take on a new look via free agency.
The Giants were one of the most active teams in free agency this year, and they had to be as approximately two dozen of their own players hit the market on March 11. They started with bolstering the offense by signing players like running back Rashad Jennings and offensive linemen Geoff Schwartz and J.D. Walton. Then they made one of their biggest moves and landed cornerback Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie. But free agency was as much about the players leaving as the ones coming. - Giants draft Odell Beckham Jr.**
All eyes were on the offense heading into the 2014 NFL Draft following the Giants' problems on that side of the ball last season. So the team drafted LSU wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., one of the most dynamic weapons coming out of college. - Eli returns from ankle procedure; Beason injures foot.**
An ankle injury suffered in the 2013 regular season finale lingered into Eli Manning's offseason, leading to an arthroscopic procedure for the franchise quarterback on April 10. Training camp was the initial target date for his return, but Manning was back under center in late May for organized team activities (OTAs) and mandatory minicamp. However, the Giants lost middle linebacker Jon Beason to a foot injury in OTAs. It was announced he will not require surgery and is hoping to return for the season opener.**
- Michael Strahan elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame; Giants to play fifth preseason game.**
The day before Super Bowl XLVIII in MetLife Stadium, the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2014 was announced, and Giants great Michael Strahan was one of the seven inductees. Along with Derrick Brooks, Ray Guy, Claude Humphrey, Walter Jones, Andre Reed, and Aeneas Williams, Strahan will be enshrined in Canton on Saturday, Aug. 2, one night before the Giants are set to face the Buffalo Bills in the annual Hall of Fame Game. >> HALL OF FAME CENTRAL
