10 things you need to know about S Jabrill Peppers

Ten things you need to know about third-year safety Jabrill Peppers, who was acquired by the Giants in a trade with the Browns pending physical exams.

1. Safety Jabrill (juh-BRILL) Peppers was originally selected by the Cleveland Browns in the first round (25th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

2. In 2018, Peppers started all 16 games, recording career-bests in tackles (77) and passes defensed (five). After starting 13 games as a rookie, Peppers has started all 29 games in which he played. His career totals over two seasons include 136 tackles (six for loss), one sack, eight passes defensed, two interceptions, four fumble recoveries, and four quarterback hits.

3. Peppers also served as the Browns' primary punt and kickoff returner. He has averaged 7.3 yards on 55 punt returns in his career with a long of 33 yards, and 22.0 yards on 33 kickoff returns with a long of 35 yards.

4. A Heisman Trophy finalist and consensus first-team All-American at the University of Michigan in 2016, Peppers won the Paul Hornung Award as the nation's most versatile player. Giants running back Saquon Barkley took home the award in 2017. Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who was part of the Peppers trade, was the award recipient in 2013 before being drafted by Big Blue.

5. Peppers was the first player in Big Ten history to win three individual awards in a single season: Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year, Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the Year and Rodgers-Dwight Return Specialist of the Year.

6. Peppers played 15 different defensive, offensive and special teams positions for the Wolverines in 2016, recording 726 snaps on defense, 154 on special teams and 53 on offense.

7. Peppers is from East Orange, New Jersey. He attended Paramus (N.J.) Catholic High School, where he helped his team win back-to-back state championships in 2012 and 2013 as a defensive back and running back.

8. Before Paramus Catholic, Peppers attended Don Bosco Preparatory High School in Ramsey, New Jersey, where he also helped his team earn state titles in 2010 and 2011 as a starting defensive back. He was named the 2013 All-USA Defensive Player of the Year by USA TODAY and was selected to the All-USA High School Football first team.

9. A track standout, he broke the New Jersey state record in the 200-meter dash as a junior, running a 20.79. He earned two state titles in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, and added state championships in the 4x400-meter relay and 4x100-meter relay.

10. Peppers credits his mother Ivory Bryant as the person who influenced him most, as well as his late older brother Don Curtis, who was fatally shot at age 20 in 2010. Peppers volunteered at youth football camps, took part in high school football field ground-breakings throughout Cleveland, and hosted a backpack giveaway in New Jersey.
