The New York Giants have acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round draft choice. The trade is pending a physical.
The 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, McCarthy spent his rookie season on injured reserve and returned to start 10 games for Minnesota in 2025. He completed 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards and 11 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He also added 181 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 37 carries.
McCarthy is 6-4 as a starter and joins a Giants quarterback room that recently lost starter Jaxson Dart for the season due to a knee injury.
"Well, we've been talking about it ever since I think Jaxson got hurt, that we would need to add a quarterback, quarterbacks," Harbaugh said. "That's part of the process. We've been turning over every stone. This was an opportunity that kind of came up and able to finish the deal off this morning, late morning. Really glad, really happy, very excited to add J.J. McCarthy. I think he's a strong, young quarterback, has some experience in National Football League. Obviously, was a very high draft pick, very talented player and is going to make us a stronger football team. So, excited about it, think it makes us better and get him in here as soon as we can. Get to work on learning the offense. Obviously, that's going to be a challenge, but we'll go to work on that and that's where we're at."
Jameis Winston started Sunday's 12-7 victory over the Titans in place of Dart, and Jake Haener was signed from the practice squad to serve as his backup.
Haener was then waived on Monday.
The Giants (2-1) will next face the Arizona Cardinals (1-2) at home on Sunday.
"Jameis is starting," Harbaugh said. "You guys asked me that last night. He's our starting quarterback and that's why we're rolling. We'll be ready to play this next game and going forward, excited about Jameis. I think we're going to find ourselves. I mean, we won the game. We did what we had to do to win the game and that's what we had to do. And I think Jameis did all the things as a quarterback that we needed to do to win that game, but that doesn't mean that's where we stand. We're going to keep growing. There's going to be new challenges in front of us. He's not going to be coming into a game kind of out of the blue, so to speak. Or is he going to be coming into a nor'easter every single week going forward here. So, I'm looking forward to seeing where we go and we'll build around. As we go too, we'll get a chance to build around Jameis' strengths, all that kind of stuff. So, I feel good about it."
Harbaugh later added, "What I don't know is who the number two quarterback is going to be. It could be Jake or it could be J.J. We're going to have to see how it plays out during the week. And that's really as far in advance as I'm even willing to think about. And that's really the answer to that."
McCarthy, voted a team captain in 2025, became the first Vikings quarterback to make his NFL debut and start in a season opener in team history. He then became the first player in NFL history to score three touchdowns (two passing and one rushing) in the fourth quarter of his debut, earning NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
McCarthy has won his last four starts, most recently a 16-3 victory over the Packers in the 2025 regular-season finale.
McCarthy served as Minnesota's No. 3 quarterback this season behind starter Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz.
Prior to the NFL, McCarthy was 27-1 as a starter at the University of Michigan and won a national championship under Jim Harbaugh, brother of current Giants head coach John Harbaugh.
"He always had good things to say about J.J.," John Harbaugh said. "I mean, I kind of watched it. I was following Michigan when Jim was coaching there. I don't follow them as much anymore, but when Jim was there, that was a team I watched closely, so I've watched J.J. play a lot."
