EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Giants and Kansas City Chiefs didn't score many points on Sunday, but they did produce a statistical oddity that hadn't occurred in an NFL game in 44 years.
Both teams called on players who were not quarterbacks to throw a pass (that's not the oddity). The passes thrown by Giants running back Shane Vereen and Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce were intercepted, by safeties Daniel Sorenson and Landon Collins, respectively.
It was the first NFL games in which in which both teams had non-quarterbacks throw interceptions since Nov. 11, 1973, when San Diego wide receiver Ron Holliday and Denver kicker Jim Turner each threw a pick in the Broncos' 30-19 victory in Denver. It was the first time players other than quarterbacks had thrown interceptions for each team in a Giants game since the 1970 merger.
Vereen was the first Giants running back to throw a pass since Dec. 24, 2005, when Tiki Barber tossed an incompletion in Washington. Amani Toomer was the intended receiver.
Before Vereen, the last Giants player other than a quarterback to throw an interception was running back Bobby Duhon, against the St. Louis Cardinals on Nov. 28, 1971. On the first play of the game, Duhon's pass was picked off by defensive back Norm Thompson, leading to the first touchdown in a 24-7 Giants loss.
*Defensive end Olivier Vernon and tackle Damon Harrison each intercepted a pass in the last two games, the first career pick for each. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it's the first time Giants defensive linemen have intercepted passes in consecutive games since Nov. 2-9, 1952 – when it was actually one player. Defensive end Jim Duncan picked off throws on the road against the Chicago Cardinals, and in the Polo Grounds vs. San Francisco. The Giants won both games.
*Rookie free agents Shane Smith (fullback) and Chad Wheeler (right tackle) each started the 12-9 victory against Kansas City. It was the first non-strike game in which the Giants started two undrafted rookies on offense since Nov. 21, 1976, when center Ralph Hill and tight end Gary Shirk were in the lineup in a 14-13 loss at Denver.
*The Giants twice led in the fourth quarter Sunday, at 6-3 and 9-6, only to have Kansas City tie the game each time. It was the first time the Giants blew a fourth-quarter lead but won since Oct. 16, 2016 against Baltimore. The Giants led that game, 20-16, before Baltimore jumped ahead, 23-20. The Giants won, 27-23, when Eli Manning threw a 66-yard touchdown pass to Odell Beckham, Jr. with 1:24 remaining.
*Neither team threw a touchdown pass on Sunday, the first time that happened in a Giants game since Oct. 27, 2013 in Philadelphia. The Giants won that game, 15-7, on five field goals. The Eagles scored the game's only touchdown by recovering Zak DeOssie's high long snap in the end zone.
*Manning threw neither a touchdown nor an interception against the Chiefs, the 13th time that's happened in his 209 starts. The Giants are 9-4 in those games.
*The Giants are 14-2 when Manning starts and doesn't throw a touchdown pass, and 52-26 when he is not intercepted.
*Manning completed 19 of 35 passes and was not sacked. It was the 18th time he threw at least 35 passes without getting sacked. The Giants are 30-15 when Manning is not sacked.
*The Giants are 3-4 under Ben McAdoo in games in which they do not allow a sack.
*Kelce caught eight passes for 109 yards, the first opposing tight end with more than 100 receiving yards against the Giants since Philadelphia's Zach Ertz on Jan. 3, 2016 (nine catches for 152 yards). When Kelce did not reach the end zone, it ended a streak of 10 consecutive games in which the Giants had allowed a touchdown to an opposing tight end.
*This season, the Giants are 2-0 when an opponent has at least 100 receiving yards, but 0-2 when an opposing player has at least 100 rushing yards.
*The Giants have had three takeaways twice this season – not coincidentally, their victories at Denver and vs. Kansas City. Their three interceptions on Sunday was their highest total since they picked off four passes vs. the Rams in London on Oct. 23, 2016.
*The Giants have had a season-high 32 rushing attempts twice, against – that's right – the Broncos and Chiefs.
*The Giants' Thanksgiving night meeting with the Redskins will be the 1,300th regular-season game in franchise history. The Giants are 686-580-33, including 381-270-16 at home and 305-310-17 as visitors.
*Correction: we incorrectly reported on Sunday that Manning was tied for third in game-winning drives among active quarterbacks (drives in which he rallied the Giants from a fourth-quarter deficit or tie to win a game). He is actually tied for fourth:
