Giants Name Somers' DeMatteo Coach of the Week

HS COACH OF THE WEEK

The Giants Foundation and Gatorade to contribute $2,000 to the football program.

East Rutherford, NJ – The New York Giants and Gatorade have selected Mr. Anthony DeMatteo of Somers High School (Somers, NY) as the Lou Rettino High School Coach of the Week for Week 9 of the 2023 season.  The Tuskers improved to 8-1 on the season with a 38-0 win over Pelham Memorial High School in the Class A quarterfinals last Friday.  The win was their 8th in a row, and their 34th straight victory against Section 1 opponents.  Somers will host Eastchester High School this Saturday in the Class A semifinals.

The Lou Rettino High School Football Coach of the Week Award is part of the Giants' continuing effort to support local high school football programs. The Giants elected to name the award in memory of former Union High School (NJ) coach, Lou Rettino, for his fine commitment to the game of football, his community and the betterment of his athletes' lives. Each week during the high school football season, the Giants selected one area high school head coach as the Coach of the Week winner. The selection is based on the coach's continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes and contributing overall to their community.

In recognition of Coach DeMatteo's selection as Coach of the Week, a $2,000 check will be granted to the school's football program from The Giants Foundation and Gatorade. He will also receive a certificate of recognition signed by Giants head coach Brian Daboll, and will be honored at a dinner following the season, as well as a 2024 pre-season home game.

Anthony DeMatteo took over as head coach in 2021, taking over for his father Tony DeMatteo, who retired after 22 years of coaching at Somers, and 360 career wins in 52 years of coaching high school football.  DeMatteo was an assistant coach under his father, contributing to a state title, three Section 1 championships and a regional bowl title during his 12 seasons. He also played football at Somers under his father and graduated in 2003.

The Tuskers football program, which currently has 11 alumni playing Division 1 college football, hasn't skipped a beat under his leadership.  Somers won the Class A state championship in 2022 with a 58-21 win over Union-Endicott, after advancing to the championship game in 2021.  The program has a record of 33-2 in the past three seasons and have outscored their opponents by an impressive margin of 288-88 this season.  For his team's accomplishments, DeMatteo was honored as the 2022 Section 1 Coach of the Year, and the 2022 New York State Class A Coach of the Year.
